Join to apply for the Engineering Manager role at Holland & Barrett
We are building a world-class omni-channel experience, powered by innovative, scalable technology. Our tech function is investing in tools, platforms, and capabilities to help customers meet their wellness goals with greater speed, convenience, and personalisation—online and in-store.
We're looking for an experienced and passionate Engineering Manager to lead our Space & Range teams – high-performing squads delivering cutting-edge software solutions for our core commercial applications that power retail operations.
Your immediate focus will be on applications that help our planners design and visualise store layouts using 3D planograms—essential tools shaping product presentation across all locations.
In this role, you'll take full ownership of team delivery, technical strategy, and people development. You'll collaborate with Product and Tech leadership to shape the future of our retail systems and maintain innovation in space planning.
What You'll Be Doing:
1. Technical Leadership: Drive the evolution of the team's technical platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and alignment with H&B's broader tech vision. Lead architecture, implementation, and code reviews, focusing on distributed systems and modern engineering practices. Stay ahead of industry trends and champion continuous improvement.
2. Team & People Leadership: Lead, mentor, and grow engineers and engineering managers, supporting their career development and fostering a culture of ownership and excellence. Attract and retain top talent. Promote a culture aligned with EPIC values (Energetic, Pioneering, Inclusive, Committed).
3. Software Delivery: Collaborate with Product Managers to develop clear roadmaps and outcomes. Lead planning, balancing feature delivery, tech debt, support, and process improvements. Ensure robust testing and modern CI/CD pipelines are in place.
4. Collaboration & Communication: Serve as a key technical leader, building relationships across teams. Communicate progress, risks, and plans effectively. Foster cross-squad collaboration for seamless solutions.
5. Experience & Technical Skills: 3+ years managing engineering teams (8+ engineers), with a proven track record of delivering impactful software at scale. Hands-on experience with JavaScript, Java, or Kotlin. Deep knowledge of microservices, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), cloud-native patterns, CI/CD, automated testing, and databases (SQL & NoSQL). Strong analytical and pragmatic problem-solving skills.
6. Leadership Qualities: Inspirational leader with coaching skills, customer-focused mindset, strategic yet hands-on approach, and adaptability in fast-changing environments.
Join us to help shape the future of retail systems and make a real impact. If you’re ready to influence how we plan and present products in-store, we’d love to hear from you.
