Specialist Community Public Health Student Nurse (School Nursing)

Trafford Local Care Organisation is a public sector organisation bringing together NHS Community Health and Social Care services in Trafford. The community healthcare teams are employed by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and deployed to us, linking closely with colleagues in Manchester Local Care Organisation.

TLCO seeks to recruit dynamic, motivated nurses or midwives to undertake a 12‑month Apprenticeship Specialist Community Public Health: Health Visiting Qualification. Salary will be at Band 5 up to mid‑point. Studies will be undertaken at Manchester Metropolitan University for 50% of the course; the remaining 50% in Health Visiting practice. You will be employed on a fixed‑term contract for the duration of the course. Successful candidates will complete an individualised learning programme documented in their Personal Portfolio of Learning. The University award will be a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health Nursing (Level 7) and will be registered on the NMC Professional Register.

Main duties of the job

Successful candidates will be expected to engage and utilise learning opportunities in community and in HEI settings. Throughout the training, a named supervisor will be responsible for supervision and training while in practice, continuing to work with the NMC Code and the local policies and procedures of the supporting Trust for legal and statutory requirements relating to clinical practice. As the course progresses, candidates will act independently under supervision and be responsible for a structured caseload when on consolidated practice with the aim to deliver a public health service. By the end of the course, candidates will have developed the knowledge base, skills and competencies required to function as a Community Public Health Practitioner – Health Visitor. They will develop skills and competencies to assess children and families with complex or single‑care needs, and to implement and evaluate programmes of care in partnership with other agencies, ensuring high‑quality care through effective leadership of the nursing team. During supervised practice they will have delegated responsibility for a selected generic caseload and, under supervision, provide assessment of care needs, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for a designated client population.

* First level registration on the appropriate part of the register
* 120 credits at Level 6 / Degree
