An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint an enthusiastic, experienced clinical leader as Sister/ Charge Nurse for Centre for Urgent Care (CUC) and The Royal Marsden Private Care Cavendish Square based at the Chelsea site. We are looking for an outstanding individual to lead a team of highly experienced nurses who provide excellent nursing care and strive to make a difference.
The RMMH, a 24/7 service which provides Royal Marsden patients with a single point of access for support when they become unwell because of their disease or treatment.
The Sister/ Charge Nurse will be an integral part of the Acute Oncology Service (AOS) Team working closely with our AOS consultants and team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs). The Sister/ Charge Nurse should be an experienced Registered Nurse that uses advanced assessment, clinical decision making and diagnostic skills to appropriately manage patients.
Main duties of the job
1. To create and maintain a safe, therapeutic clinical environment for all patients and their families who come to the area. To co-ordinate all functions and activities proactively within the designated clinical environment.
2. To manage resources of clinical area within budgetary limitations eg. Finance, equipment and staff (including temporary staff).
3. To provide strong clinical leadership of the nursing and support workers that is motivating, supportive and sets clear boundaries resulting in high quality safe patient care.
4. To support a clinical learning environment that enables nursing staff to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
5. To demonstrate a positive, realistic and supportive attitude to the patient with cancer to ensure that physiological, psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs of the patient and family are met.
6. To actively manage the patients clinical stay to ensure that the length of patient stay is not any longer than necessary. To liaise with the relevant NHS and (Private Patient Services) Admissions Department with regard to ensuring preoperative assessment is appropriately booked.
7. To be a professional role model for junior staff, demonstrating clinical skills competently, be a knowledgeable, critical thinking practitioner, demonstrating a polite, compassionate attitude towards patients and their families.
8. Recognise and respond to patients’ changing condition, using knowledge, skills and experience to direct, support and manage both staff and the situation. Provide support to staff during and after emergency situations, including debriefs and clinical supervision as necessary.

9. Registration
10. Evidence of ongoing professional development Qualification in oncology or speciality
11. Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent)
12. Recognised teaching qualification
13. Recognised mentoring and assessing qualification
14. First Level management qualification and/or experience in clinical management.
15. Relevant experience post registration

16. Experience of ongoing professional development
17. Experience of Intravenous Drug Administration
18. Experience of Venepuncture/Cannulation or Willingness to develop these skills on appointment
19. Sufficient experience to be able to undertake Ward Manager role
20. Demonstrate clear ability and responsibility for creating a dynamic learning environment
21. Experience in chemotherapy administration

22. Evidence of relevant teaching experience
23. Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management
Skills Abilities/knowledge
Essential criteria
24. Evidence of a good understanding of NHS (or equivalent) reforms including those affecting cancer and relevant services.
25. Budget monitoring/management experience.
26. Computer literacy.

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
