Senior Continence Nurse

Provide expert Knowledge to professionals, service users and carers regarding the identification, assessment, management, and treatment of continence problems for children. At home or in Hospital and in local clinics.

Support specialist education and training to primary healthcare team and Local Authority.

Providing evidence-based continence service and develop clinical services for children, including research and audit.

Work collaboratively and cooperatively to develop the children's continence services and improve the quality of care delivered to children.

Accept delegated responsibility from Service Lead and delegate appropriately to other members of the team.


Main duties of the job

Maintain the specialist level of knowledge necessary to the role in relation to identification assessment, management, and treatment of continence problems. Provide clinical care for children in a variety of settings including children and family and where appropriate school.

To manage a caseload of children/service users who require a Specialist Continence Nursing Care Programme. Act as creditable role model, educator, and expert clinician.

To triage efficiently and delegate appropriate action.

Independently prescribed with a known clinical Specialist Area.

Act as an expert continence advisor, ensuring the clinical advice is available to purchasers, commissioners, and service users. Including carers, relatives seeking advice on the management of children with continence problems.

Participate in the development of policies, guidelines and pathways for continence care that are evidence based.

Support the Service Lead ensuring that the services are benchmarked locally and nationally, using the Essence of Care benchmarking standards.

Responsible for ensuring a robust system of dissemination or best practise via the Continence Link Nurse System or educational programmes where required.

Job responsibilities

Professional/Clinical

4.1.1. Maintain registration with the NMC and work within the Code of Conduct at all times

4.1.2. Maintain the specialist level of knowledge necessary to the role in relation to identification assessment, management, and treatment of continence problems. Provide clinical care for children in a variety of settings including children and family and where appropriate school.

4.1.3. To manage a caseload of children/service users who require a Specialist Continence Nursing Care Programme. Act as creditable role model, educator, and expert clinician.

4.1.4.To triage efficiently and delegate appropriate action.

4.1.5.Independently prescribed with a known clinical Specialist Area.

4.1.6.Act as an expert continence advisor, ensuring the clinical advice is available to purchasers, commissioners, and service users. Including carers, relatives seeking advice on the management of children with continence problems.

4.1.7.Participate in the development of policies, guidelines and pathways for continence care that are evidence based.

4.1.8.Support the Service Lead ensuring that the services is benchmarked locally and nationally, using the Essence of Care benchmarking standards.

4.1.9.Responsible for ensuring a robust system of dissemination or best practise via the Continence Link Nurse System or educational programmes where required.

Education

4.2.1 Facilitation of education packages appropriate to individual settings and across boundaries including higher Education.

4.2.2 Deliver and evaluate training sessions.

4.2.3 Identify own personal development needs and maintain continuing professional development by attending appropriate courses and conferences and other experimental opportunities and thorough professional organisations and meetings.

4.2.4 Liaise with appropriate agencies, ensure partnership working, joint educational initiatives and service development to meet the children's NSFs target of integrated continence service.

4.2.5 Ensure own compliance in compliance of others about mandatory training related to Continence Care.

Managerial

4.3.1 Support the service led to line manage individuals working within the integrated Children's Continence Service.

4.3.2 Deputise for the service Lead.

4.3.3 Ensure effective use of physical and financial resources.

4.3.4 Undertake clinical supervision of nursing individuals or group basis.

4.3.5 Support clinicians regarding expert knowledge, identified development needs and perform appraisal reviews with the Children's Continence Team

4.3.4 Act as a mentor to students and other members of the Team

4.3.5 Contribute to the development continence policies, considering changes in clinical practice.

4.3.6 Submit reports on any untoward incident involving patient or staff and ensure the staff report incidents appropriately.

4.3.7 Ensure the service led to ensure that the developments within the Continence Service considers local, national, and professional priorities and inform the Wirral Places vision.

4.4 Research, Evaluation and Audit

4.4.1 Participate in research and audit with the speciality, local and nationally, interpreting and analysing the results of the data.

4.4.2 Critically appraise and disseminate current prevalent research.

4.4.3 Implement encourage evidence-based practice in all aspects of Continence Care.

4.4.4 Disseminate research on audit findings through professional groups.

4.4.5 Promote patient and public involvement.

Finance

4.5.1 Support the service lead and ensuring the service remains within budget.

4.5.2 Acts in accordance with Standard Financial instructions always.

4.5.3 Participate in the procurement and evaluation of projects ranges.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse Child or Registered Nurse (1st Level)
* Teaching and Assessing Module Level 6
* Nursing Degree (or working towards)
* Urology and Continence Promotion Module Level 3
* Bladder scanning
* Nurse prescribing


Experience

* Assessment and Care Planning for patients with continence problems
* Recent experience of working with children
* Community Experience


Skills

* Excellent interpersonal skills and organisational skills
* A demonstrated ability to manage, evaluate and sustain change in practice
* Ability to work autonomously
* A demonstrated ability to teach, supervise and develop practice in other
* Proven experience of own commitment to clinical practice development
* A sound knowledge of current issues in nursing practice
