Overview
Consultant in Old Age Liaison Psychiatry – 225724 PM. Permanent, full time (40 hours per week) post based in St John’s Hospital. This is a 10 session post, part of the Older Adult Psychiatry team, providing liaison psychiatry to patients over 65 in medical and surgical wards at St John’s Hospital (6 sessions) and consultant cover to two HBCCC wards for dementia care (2 sessions). There is potential to revise clinical work to fit service needs and applicant interests.
There is an opportunity to develop the old age liaison service, with potential to design new policies, guidelines, or teaching for the general hospital. The postholder will be supported by a liaison team including 2 liaison nurses and a liaison psychiatrist in the general adult liaison team who has some sessions for older adults.
Responsibilities
* Assess and manage mental health on medical and surgical wards with the support of liaison nurses.
* Attend MDT meetings on the wards and liaise with families when appropriate.
* Use the Mental Health Act and the Adults with Incapacity Act; support other specialties with complex capacity assessments.
* Provide 2 sessions per week to HBCCC dementia wards in West Lothian (Craigmair building, Livingston and Tippethill Hospital). Review patients, form management plans, participate in ward rounds and family meetings, and contribute to discharge planning.
* Review patients in the HBCCC wards prior to transfer from acute old age psychiatry wards and contribute to ongoing care plans.
* Engage in regular teaching and departmental teaching, including regional old age psychiatry teaching and medical/psychiatric teaching activities.
Requirements / Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration and a license to practice; eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register.
* Evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT, or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview (UK-trained applicants).
* Portfolio Pathway (CESR) route doctors are eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post only after award; non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
