About the role
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Environmental Health Officer to join our Commercial Team within the Public Protection Service. You will play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and ensuring regulatory compliance across a wide range of commercial premises through proactive inspections, investigations, and enforcement. Your responsibilities will include:
Key Responsibilities:
* Food safety & Hygiene inspections, conducting routine and reactive inspections of food businesses in accordance with Food Standards Agency guidelines, ensuring compliance with hygiene regulations, and identifying areas for improvement.
* Health & Safety Enforcement, carrying out inspections and assessments under health and safety legislation, identifying risks, and enforcing appropriate controls to protect workers and the public.
* Statutory nuisance investigations, investigating reports of statutory nuisance, using tools like the Noise App to gather evidence, assessing impact, and taking enforcement action where necessary.
* Sampling and analysis, undertaking formal and informal sampling of food, water, or environmental material, interpreting laboratory results, and taking appropriate follow-up actions.
* Public and Business engagement, providing clear, practical advice to businesses and the public on environmental health matters, promoting best practices and legal compliance.
* Planning application consultation, reviewing and providing expert environmental health input on planning applications to ensure public health considerations are integrated into development proposals.
* Enforcement and legal action, preparing and serving statutory notices, compiling evidence for legal proceedings, and representing the service in court when required.
* Complaint investigations, responding to and investigating complaints related to commercial premises, including food safety, hygiene, health and safety.
About You:
We are seeking a proactive and knowledgeable Environmental Health professional with a passion for protecting public health and ensuring compliance across commercial premises.
* Excellent communication skills - able to engage confidently with the public, businesses, colleagues, and senior management both verbally and in writing.
* In-depth knowledge of environmental health legislation, particularly relating to food safety, health and safety, and statutory nuisance.
* Proven experience in conducting inspections, investigations, and enforcement actions across various environmental health areas.
* Confidence in challenging situations, remaining calm, assertive, and professional when dealing with conflicts or sensitive issues.
* Strong analytical skills, enabling interpretation of sampling results and providing clear, evidence-based recommendations.
* Digital proficiency, including use of specialized tools such as Civica APP, Idox, and the Noise App, alongside general ICT systems.
* A flexible approach to working hours, including availability to work outside core hours (07:00-19:00) when required.
* A full UK driving license and access to a vehicle, essential for site visits and inspections.
Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week, based around the usual business working week. Depending on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis.
