The Role
These unique posts provide rich opportunities to develop interests and expertise in medical education whilst broadening your clinical experience.
· We have a vacancy for two Junior Clinical/Education Fellow to commence August 2026 for 12 months. Candidates will each complete 6 months in education & 6 months working clinically.
· The posts will 50% educational and 50% clinical service provision (clinical attachment in Urology) and you will work a 6 month on/off rota between clinical and education duties.
· Funding will be made available for the successful applicants to complete a PG qualification in medical educational (if undertaking the role for a full 12 months only) if the candidate does not already hold this. The qualification and education provider where this will be undertaken will be determined by the Trust.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Role – Junior Clinical Fellow in Urology
Care of patients on wards. This post will particularly be related to managing patients with a focus on optimising them for safe and timely discharges. In addition to this the role offers the successful candidate the opportunity to take part in outpatient clinics and assist in theatre.
Main Duties
· Ward rounds, Assist in theatre, Take part in OPD clinics (across Trust)
· Attending MDT meetings, Clerking of new admissions
· Undertaking routine clinical procedures, Follow up management of inpatients
· Process chasing of investigations, referrals & procedures, Prescribing
· Discharge summaries, Contributing to quality improvement programs
· Please note that you may be working clinically across any ELHT site within this role
Education role:
These will be multi-professional sessions and will span a broad range of specialities and topics
The majority of the post holder’s role will be focused towards teaching & supervising undergraduate medical and physician associate students. However it is strongly expected that you will make some contribute to the education of other learners within the Trust
The posts will include:
* Skills sessions, Ward based supervision/teaching
* Bedside teaching, Lecture and tutorial session (where required)
* Case presentations, CBL & PBL
* Simulation sessions, Student supervision & assessment
* Support the delivery of medical student OSCE's

The post has been designed primarily for trainees who are looking to take a break from their training after successfully completing their FY2 placements as a minimum. The posts will provide the successful candidates with an opportunity to develop an exciting portfolio in medical education working closely with our internal education team as well as our university partners.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Role – Junior Clinical Fellow in Urology (50% of time per candidate)
The Urology service at ELHT is progressive and forward thinking and these posts present an exciting opportunity to join a cohesive team of enthusiastic Urology professionals who are supported by high quality colleagues in the wider multi-disciplinary team.
The Urology Directorate sits within the Surgical and Anaesthetic Services Division. We currently have 10 Consultants who are supported by 8 middle grades, comprising of 3 SpRs from the North West rotation (reflecting a high commitment to training), and 5 Senior Clinical Fellows. The department is also supported by 1 CT1, 2 FY2’s and 3 FY1’s.
The department is an accredited cancer centre for the Lancashire and South Cumbria Cancer Network where the major pelvic cancer surgery is currently split between East Lancashire Hospitals Trust and one other provider. The trust has an NHS commissioned da Vinci robot which is used for radical prostatectomies, partial nephrectomies and cystectomies.
Although this post is not a recognised UK training post, the post-holder will have a named, enthusiastic supervisor, and be supported in undertaking a wide range of CV-enhancing activities.
During your Education time you will contribute to clinical placements of all learners providing:

Management
+ Work with the education teams at ELHT and, where appropriate, from all our education partners
+ Collaborate and work closely with East Lancashire Primary Care educators where opportunities permit
+ Participate in appropriate curriculum committees
+ Provide leadership and oversight to the ELHT Foundation School Medical Undergraduate Teaching Committee
Learning & Development
+ Network with clinical staff to share best practice.
+ Work collaboratively with the all Educators across the organisation to promote standardised training and education
+ Assist with the update of lesson plans and teaching resources to constantly seek to improve the quality of education through the use of evidence-based practice, liaising with professional colleagues, reviewing literature and evaluating feedback
+ Develop evaluation methods to assess the impact of education on patient care
+ Deliver programmes of learning
+ Set up and maintain equipment for teaching sessions, as required
+ Provide constructive feedback to learners on their performance
+ Produce regular reports and audit data on progress to the Clinical Education Lead which are clear, fluent, concise and easily understood
+ Actively promote equal opportunities for access to learning & development to all staff from all backgrounds
+ Act as a member of the education team with attendance at relevant meetings, as directed
+ As a student supervisor, your role will be to oversee your student(s) progress during the module and provide feedback both verbal and written.
Professional Development, Supervision & Support
+ You will be provided with an enthusiastic named educational supervisor
+ You will participate in the agreed personal development and appraisal plan
+ The candidate will complete a postgraduate certificate in medical education or other similar educational qualification
+ Your role will be a 50:50 split between education and clinical activities and this includes annual leave & study leave entitlements. As you will work 6 months on/off, your holiday & study leave entitlement should be taken, where possible, equally over each 6 month rotation between clinical and educational duties. In addition, you will accrue leave for bank holidays. If a bank holiday falls during your educational rotation, then this will be taken as leave as these days are NOT considered as normal working days by the education department.

+ Develop and deliver an effective pastoral system appropriate to the needs of each student group in your speciality
o PLEASE NOTE: Education teaching will be multi-professional sessions and will span a broad range of specialities and topics. Although we will look to utilise any special interests or knowledge, your education delivery will not be limited to any specific speciality.

Knowledge Requirements
Essential criteria
* Knowledge of medical training and evidence of competence in relevant procedures
* Knowledge of education and training issues from competition of UK based Medical degree or a minimum of 12 months previous NHS experience
* Good communication skills with ability to motivate colleagues – medical and non-medical
* Ability to work in a team
* Demonstrates professionalism in attitude and application
Desirable criteria
* Awareness of national agenda in relation to medical education and training
Qualifications
Essential criteria
* MBBS or equivalent
* Full Registration with GMC and Licence to Practise
* Successful completion of Foundation Training
* Completed foundation training at UK Hospital or has 12 months experience working as a doctor in a UK hospital.
Desirable criteria
* Evidence of publications in medical education journals
