Offer description

Join to apply for the Operations Engineer EC&I and Mechanical role at National Gas.

Location: (Onsite) Wormington, Broadway - Within 1.5h Commute

Salary: Paying Up to £65,000 (+ overtime & bonus)

About Us

National Gas is securing Britain’s energy. We transport gas throughout Great Britain, repair and maintain gas pipelines, and manage the meters that allow millions of homes and businesses to access the energy they need. We are the national gas network, providing secure energy to power Britain, achieve net zero, and maintain our industrial competitiveness.

About The Role

We’re looking for a technically skilled and safety‑focused Operations Engineer to join and lead our Operations team on site at Wormington Compressor Station. You’ll be the technical lead for Electrical, Instrumentation and Mechanical disciplines within your area, acting as a key point for works planning, escalation and ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient operations across our transmission assets.

Wormington Compressor Station and local above ground Installations (AGIs) are some of the most critical operational sites within the UK’s Transmission Network. These sites will be undergoing major investment over the next 5 years, alongside our normal ‘business as usual’ operations. It’s an exciting time to be part of a team that, at certain times of the year, manages a third of the total gas injection into the UK’s transmission network.

Important: This is not an on‑the‑tools role. You’ll act as a technical authority and advisor on site, influencing all types of delivery works rather than performing hands‑on maintenance, therefore experience in a leadership‑style role with direct reports would be an advantage.

What You’ll Be Doing

* Provide technical leadership and coaching to operational teams
* Act as Authorising Engineer for multi‑discipline permits to work
* Conduct competency assessments and workplace evaluations
* Lead defect resolution and prioritise maintenance interventions
* Ensure compliance with health, safety, and engineering standards
* Support design studies with technical input on safety, maintainability, and cost
* Participate in a 24/7 standby rota (mainly phone support) but act as Incident Controller during emergency situations.

About You

* Strong Electrical, Instrumentation and/or Mechanical engineering knowledge
* Experience working within a formal permit‑to‑work system
* Excellent project, planning and financial management skills
* A deep commitment to personal and process safety
* Ability to build strong relationships across internal and external stakeholders
* High standards of integrity and professionalism
* Knowledge of gas/oil industry, regulations and procedures – desirable

Key Requirements

* Time‑served apprenticeship or recognised training scheme in Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation, Electronics or Control Systems
* HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering discipline
* Degree in a relevant engineering subject – desirable
* IOSH Managing Safely certification – desirable
* DSEAR / Compex Trained – desirable
* Valid UK driving licence

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.

What we offer

* Annual bonus of up to 6% based on personal and company performance
* 26 days’ holiday plus statutory holidays – option available to buy extra holiday days
* All overtime at 1.5 or 2.0 rates.
* Generous double‑match pension scheme – for every £1 you put in, we’ll add £2 (max company contribution 12%)
* An optional flexible benefit scheme, including private healthcare, dental insurance, technology plans, travel insurance
* Death in service 10x your basic salary
* Financial protection if you’re unable to work due to long‑term illness or injury
* Excellent family‑friendly provisions – maternity/paternity/adoption/shared parental leave
* Professional development and career progression
* Employee assistance programme offering free confidential professional counselling 24 hours per day
* Financial support to help you cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, relevant to your role

Inclusive recruitment

At National Gas, we are disability confident and signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant. We are committed to building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage you to let us know of any reasonable adjustments you may need.
