Our client a family-run manufacturing business with multiple sites across Yorkshire is seeking an experienced HSE Director to lead and develop its health, safety, and environmental strategy. The successful candidate will ensure all operations meet the highest standards of compliance, sustainability, and workforce wellbeing — while maintaining a visible and proactive presence across the shop floor.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Develop, implement, and continuously improve the company’s HSE management systems, policies, and procedures in line with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and other relevant standards.
Provide expert guidance to the board and senior leadership team on HSE risks, performance, and compliance obligations.
Champion a culture of safety, accountability, and environmental responsibility throughout the business.
Lead annual HSE planning and goal setting aligned with operational and business objectives.
Conduct and oversee regular site audits, inspections, and compliance reviews across all manufacturing locations in Yorkshire.
Manage and monitor risk assessments, method statements, and safe systems of work across departments.
Ensure robust incident investigation and root cause analysis processes are followed, with corrective actions implemented effectively.
Monitor HSE KPIs, incident trends, and environmental impact metrics; report performance data to the Board.
Drive the company’s environmental strategy, including waste reduction, energy efficiency, and sustainable materials usage.
Ensure compliance with all environmental permits, legislation, and reporting requirements.
Lead initiatives to reduce carbon footprint and improve overall sustainability performance.
Be a visible presence on the shop floor, engaging with teams to reinforce best practice and identify improvements.
Provide training, coaching, and support to managers and employees to build HSE competence and awareness.
Foster open communication on safety issues, encouraging proactive hazard reporting and employee involvement.
Manage and mentor a small HSE team (if applicable), ensuring consistent standards across all sites.
Skills and Qualifications:
Proven experience in a senior HSE leadership role within a manufacturing or industrial environment (multi-site experience desirable).
Strong working knowledge of UK HSE legislation, compliance standards, and auditing processes.
Experience implementing ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 frameworks.
NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) required; Chartered Membership of IOSH preferred.
Demonstrable experience driving cultural change and achieving measurable safety improvements.
