Job Purpose To supervise and deliver a visible, high-quality Town Ranger service that supports a cleaner, greener and safer Stowmarket. The postholder has day-to-day operational responsibility for public realm improvements, twice-weekly market operations and Town Council play areas, ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently and to agreed standards. Working as part of the Operations Team, the Lead Ranger contributes to routine operations, projects, events, environmental initiatives and reactive tasks across the Town Council estate.
Public Realm and Environmental Delivery:
1. Deliver and supervise a proactive Town Ranger service so that public spaces are clean, safe and well maintained.
2. Carry out and oversee practical improvements including vegetation control, cleaning, minor repairs, graffiti and litter removal, painting and general maintenance so that environmental standards are consistently met.
3. Undertake approved spraying operations and maintain accurate records so that works are compliant and accountable.
4. Operate a ward-based approach so that areas are improved thoroughly and consistently.
5. Record before-and-after evidence of works so that outcomes are visible and reportable.
6. Work with volunteers and community groups so that civic pride and partnership working are strengthened. Operational Services and Asset Management
7. Lead twice-weekly market operations so that set-up, pack-down, waste management and safety checks are completed efficiently and safely.
8. Oversee inspection and maintenance of Town Council play areas so that statutory requirements and safety standards are met.
9. Maintain vehicles, tools, equipment and PPE so that resources are safe, compliant and fit for purpose.
10. Support maintenance of Council assets including bins, signage, grit bins, flags and speed indicator devices so that community infrastructure remains functional and presentable.
11. Contribute to environmental improvement and carbon reduction initiatives so that operational activity supports Council sustainability objectives. Team Leadership and Work Planning
12. Plan and coordinate weekly work programmes so that priorities are clear and services are delivered on schedule.
13. Brief, allocate and supervise the Town Ranger team so that work is completed safely and to a high standard.
14. Monitor quality, productivity and timekeeping so that performance expectations are maintained.
15. Hold day-to-day operational responsibility for markets and play areas so that standards of safety, condition and presentation are consistently achieved.
16. Report incidents, risks or delays promptly so that issues are managed effectively. Health, Safety and Operational Support
17. Ensure all duties are carried out in accordance with health and safety procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work so that staff and public safety is protected.
18. Support civic and community events, estate maintenance and reactive tasks (including gritting and emergency response) so that Council services remain resilient and responsive.
19. Maintain high standards of organisation within the depot and storage areas so that operations are efficient and safe.
20. Undertake additional duties commensurate with the role so that operational needs are met flexibly.
