We are looking for a knowledgeable, dedicated, and forward-thinking individual for this exciting role in paediatric radiation Oncology.

This post is 40-hours per week working Monday-Friday covering a mix of early, late and mid shifts covering 7am-7pm with occasional weekend shifts and night shifts. The post is based at The Proton Beam Therapy Centre at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester.

You will manage the clinical care of Paediatric patients at The Christie as part of the Paediatric MDT.

You will be supported by consultant clinical oncologists and Royal Manchester Children Hospital (RMCH) Paediatric Oncology team

Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you will have dedicated time for research tailored to your areas of interest. You’ll be involved in a variety of research and service improvement projects, with the flexibility to shape these to align with your professional goals.

Applicants will be working as part of a national service which offers PBT and radiotherapy to patients across the UK.

The role includes the direct clinical management of Paediatric patients treated with photon and proton radiotherapy and any other Paediatric patients attending the trust for treatments such as total body irradiation and radioiodine. The postholder will carry the Paediatric crash bleep which could also involve responding to emergencies with Paediatric visitors on site.
Clinical responsibilities will include management of Paediatric patients attending the christie. This will include managing any children that become unwell at the Christie in addition to on- treatment reviews for paediatric proton and photon patients, managing toxicities of radiotherapy.

You will participate in the Paediatric MDT meetings and develop close working relationships with other members of the multi-disciplinary team including clinical oncologists, advanced nurse practitioners, nursing staff, anesthetists, play specialists, radiographers and keyworkers. You will work in collaboration with RMCH oncology department, liaise with relevant professionals and make appropriate and timely referrals when necessary.

In addition to MDTs, you will have the opportunity to join and participate in wide variety of educational, research, leadership and management activities like Proton Seminars, Proton Research Community, PBT Journal Clubs, PBT fellows Teaching, proton late effects clinics and Paediatric outpatient clinics

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of high‑quality consultant‑led care across 7 days. This includes participation in planned weekend and weekday clinical activity to support safe, timely decision‑making and continuity of care for patients.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country. We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Responsibilities

• Participation in paediatric MDT.

• Reviewing on-treatment and follow-up patients independently either face-to-face or virtually.

• Treatment reviews for paediatric proton and photon patients, managing toxicities of radiotherapy.

• Managing any children that become unwell at the Christie

• Liaison with paediatric oncology team at RMCH.

• Medical care of paediatric radioiodine inpatients

• Carry the paediatric crash bleep which could also involve responding to emergencies with paediatric visitors on site

• Long term follow up care of paediatric patients

• Work alongside a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, including oncologists, physicists, radiographers, and specialist nurses.

• Contribute to Paediatric governance

Academic Contributions:

• Present findings at conferences and contribute to scientific publications to advance the field of proton therapy.

• Support education and training initiatives for peers, medical students, resident doctors, and allied health professionals

• Contribute to clinical research, including the development of your research area and projects, and involvement in ongoing clinical trials. You will also support ongoing multi-centre clinical trials and evaluative commissioning in proton (ECIP).

In addition to MDTs, you will have the opportunity to join and participate in wide variety of educational, research, leadership and management activities like PBT Mortality and Morbidity Meeting, Proton Seminars, Proton Research Community, PBT Journal Clubs, PBT fellows Teaching, proton late effects clinics and paediatric outpatient clinics

Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you will have dedicated time for research tailored to your areas of interest. You’ll be involved in a variety of research and service improvement projects, with the flexibility to shape these to align with your professional goals. Throughout your tenure, you will receive support to write up and publish your findings and present them at both national and international conferences.

Administrative Duties:

Assist in administrative tasks related to direct patient care, National PBT Registry and service development.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
The Trust supports the requirements for CPD as laid down by the GMC and royal colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

The Trust encourages all SAS doctors to engage with their wider peers and actively engage with their own development to fulfill their potential future career pathway. We encourage our workforce to utilise the Trust development/educational resources and close linkage to our SAS Tutor for support.

Job Planning
The job plan outlines the requirements of the post and may be altered by joint agreement with the Divisional Clinical Director and Service Manager and in response to service needs. Job Plans are prospectively agreed subject to an annual individual job plan review (May – September). It is expected that the initial Job Plan discussion will take place within the first six months of employment at the Trust and then be aligned to the Trusts annual Job Planning review cycle.

The annual review will examine all aspects of the job plan (including any educational and supervision components) and will also include an assessment of professional development with defined goals for the future. The SAS job plan will include a combination of Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA) delivered across the 7‑day week.

Weekend working will consist of programmed clinical activities that are job‑planned, scheduled in advance, and reviewed annually through the job planning process.

The pattern and timing of weekday and weekend programmed activities will be agreed on appointment and subsequently reviewed through the annual job planning cycle, taking account of service needs and consultant preferences.

Essential Training/Mandatory Training
To ensure you maintain safe practice and understand Trust requirements, you must ensure your essential/mandatory training modules are maintained at all times using allocated core SPA time to complete them.

On call Commitments
This role does not require participation in the on-call rota. [This will mainly be Monday-Friday working 8 hour shifts between hours of 7am-7pm. The role also includes 3 Saturdays in a 12 month period covering on call contingency shifts and will include bank holiday clinical shifts and may include very occasional night shifts to manage paediatric radio iodine patients admitted for treatment.
