Offer description

This post offers the opportunity for a committed and ambitious clinician to join the NHS Lanarkshire Medicine for Older Adults department based at University Hospital Wishaw. The candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of Medicine for Older Adults care but especially with a focus on acute frailty. We are also keen for the successful candidate to develop any subspecialty interest they may have.

Acute Medicine for Older Adults services are provided on all three acute Lanarkshire hospital sites. These include acute frailty assessment and rehabilitation for these patients as well as Hospital at Home service. However, University Hospital Wishaw is the trauma centre for NHS Lanarkshire so the majority of the orthogeriatrics service is based within UHW. There is also an acute stroke ward located within the department which delivers acute stroke care and rehabilitation. Subspecialty work within the department includes movement disorder service, falls clinics. There is also interim care beds affiliated with the department that provide slow stream rehabilitation, intermediate care and hospital-based complex clinical care.

The department is about to establish an acute frailty unit and is an exciting time to join the department as it works with NHS Lanarkshire Frailty network to improve and deliver frailty services fit for the 21st century.

Centralisation of trauma services occurred five years ago and a review of the trauma service is also underway to ensure that the service remains in line with Scottish Hip Fracture Audit targets while recognising the increase in silver trauma and planning for this.

Proposals for additional SPA time from applicants are encouraged. In addition to the one PA for non-DCC/SPA activities, the Board is supportive of applications for additional SPA time from individuals with well-developed ideas for improving services who are able to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety (including human factors training), medical education, research & development, acting as an appraiser, and more. Applicants who can demonstrate a commitment to any of the above, or other areas, and wish to commence on more than one PA for SPA duties should discuss proposals with the identified Recruitment Lead and/or Service Manager, who will consider the request in line with the successful candidate’s professional and service requirements.

Applicants wishing to work less than full-time or job share are also encouraged to apply.
