Be part of something big
At BakerHicks, our Ground Engineering specialists are central to delivering some of the UK’s most complex and high-impact infrastructure schemes. As our workload continues to expand, we’re looking for a Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic team in Manchester or Motherwell.
You’ll work across sectors such as Rail, Highways, Power, Defence, Aviation, Life Sciences, Water, and more — playing a key role in technical delivery while supporting junior engineers and contributing to the development of innovative, integrated ground engineering solutions.
What you'll be doing
* Delivering comprehensive geotechnical design and specification packages from concept through to completion
* Ground modelling and derivation of characteristic geotechnical parameters
* Preparing desk studies, GI specifications, and interpretive reports
* Designing shallow and piled foundations, retaining structures, soil nails, and earthworks
* Addressing complex ground issues: soft ground, slope failure, mine workings, marginal materials
* Supervising ground investigations and providing site-based support when needed
* Collaborating with multidisciplinary design teams across sectors
* Representing BakerHicks in client meetings and design discussions
* Ensuring designs meet current codes including EC7, BS, CDM, and H&S standards
What we’re looking for
* A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology (or equivalent)
* Working towards chartership (ICE, GeolSoc, IMMM) — MSc or PhD a bonus
* Full UK driving licence
* Design consultancy experience is essential
* Proven geotechnical design experience: foundations, walls, earthworks, slope stability, etc.
* Practical knowledge of UK ground conditions and investigation practices
* Proficient with geotechnical design software (GEO5 experience desirable)
* Strong technical writing and communication skills
* A collaborative, solution-focused mindset
* PTS certification is desirable, but not essential
* Willingness to travel occasionally for short-term UK site work
