Environmental Protection Officer – Enforcement and Interventions (Permanent)
Overview
Join SEPA's Enforcement Function as part of the Enforcement Support & Interventions team. The role focuses on designing and delivering thematic interventions to disrupt environmental criminality, supporting investigations and enforcement actions, and developing training & awareness materials.
Key Responsibilities
* The Enforcement Support & Interventions team delivers a broad range of activity across SEPA’s regulatory remit, including designing and delivering thematic interventions, providing specialist support to investigations and enforcement cases, developing training and awareness materials, and supporting enforcement tools such as monetary penalties.
* Manage travel across Scotland; you may be the sole team member in local offices.
* In the Interventions area, work with a specialist to design and deliver interventions targeting environmental criminality, reducing harm and improving compliance. Work with Enforcement Support on investigations and serious non‑compliance responses, including evidence gathering, case management, witness and suspect statements, and prosecution reports.
* Engage with operators, businesses, and individuals, providing advice and dealing confidently with those seeking to profit from illegal activity or failing to meet responsibilities.
Qualifications & Experience
* SCQF Level 8–10 experience or equivalent qualification (minimum HND).
* Technical knowledge of enforcement and/or environmental regulation and advice to internal stakeholders.
* Demonstrated experience in investigations, enforcement, and interventions, including fieldwork under health and safety protocols.
* Strong written reporting skills and ability to propose recommendations.
* Proven ability to build relationships with partners and customers and handle challenging situations professionally.
Additional Requirements
* Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) pre‑employment checks, including a level two Disclosure Scotland check.
* Security Clearance (SC) vetting.
