Locum Consultant in Paediatric Haematology

This is a fixed term of 12 months, 10 PA full-time, Joint Post, based at both St Mary's Hospital site, Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust, and The Royal London Hospital site, Barts Health NHS Trust. Paediatric non‑malignant haematology services across both sites provide care for children with complex and long‑term conditions, including haemoglobinopathies, bone marrow failure syndromes and patients requiring advanced therapies, such as bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy. The service is undergoing a period of exciting expansion, driven by increasing demand, the introduction of gene editing therapies, and the need to strengthen clinical resilience, collaboration and workforce sustainability across sites.

This post will be for one year, but will be advertised as a substantive post down the line. Applicants must hold Full and Specialist registration (and with a license to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC). Candidates should have CCT (or be within 6 months of CCT or equivalent) with subspecialty accreditation FRCPath (or equivalent in Paediatric Haemato‑Oncology). Applicants that are non‑UK trained will be required to show evidence or equivalence to the UK CCT.

Applicants should have a suitable qualification and strong interest in paediatric haematology and bone marrow transplantation.

Main duties of the job

The postholder's job plan is anticipated to contain 10 programmed activities per week, on average, to be carried out at The Royal London and St Mary's Hospital sites. Direct clinical care and on‑call commitment will vary depending on the background of the candidate and the final job plan is open for discussion. It is expected that there will be a degree of flexibility in the Consultant working pattern. The post‑holder will have clinics, attending and on‑call duties across both sites, however these will be reduced in frequency at each site, given the dual‑site role. Attending duties at The Royal London Hospital will be in a 1:6 week pattern, with on‑call, non‑resident duties following a 1:5 week pattern, with the exception of attending weeks at St Mary’s Hospital. The attending and on‑call duties at St Mary’s Hospital follow a 1:10 week pattern and are on‑site.

The postholder will be provided with time in their job plan to meet the requirements for continuing professional development as laid down by the GMC.

The postholder will be supported by a team of Nurse Specialists, technicians and Consultant colleagues. Administrative support and office facilities are provided and the postholder will be offered a Consultant mentor.

Job responsibilities

The Royal London Hospital serves a diverse population with a high prevalence of sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and other inherited blood disorders, while St Mary's Hospital is a key tertiary centre within WLCH, supporting transplant and advanced haematology pathways. This joint consultant post has been developed to enhance clinical capacity, improve cross‑site working, and ensure consistent, high‑quality care for children requiring specialist haematology input.

The postholder will work closely with multidisciplinary teams across both organisations, contributing to inpatient and outpatient care, attending and on‑call rosters, and MDT activity. In addition, the role will support the ongoing development of advanced therapy services, including gene editing and transplant readiness, in line with approved business cases and national commissioning requirements. Opportunities exist to contribute to education, training and service development, and, depending on the individual's interests and experience, to develop research or academic activity aligned with Imperial College London as the service evolves.
