Are you passionate about helping young learners overcome challenges and achieve their full potential?

GSL Education are looking for an empathetic and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary) to join a supportive school in North Shields. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children facing emotional and social challenges. As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you’ll help pupils develop emotional regulation, positive behaviour, and the confidence to succeed in school.

About the Role:
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you’ll provide tailored support to children with SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs. You’ll work closely with teachers and support staff to create a safe, structured, and nurturing environment that helps students overcome barriers to learning and develop positive coping strategies.

Key Responsibilities of a SEMH Teaching Assistant:

* Offer one-to-one and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
* Assist with personalised learning and behaviour plans, in collaboration with the SENCO and class teacher.
* Support students in managing emotions and developing coping strategies.
* Create a positive, structured classroom environment to boost engagement and confidence.
* Deliver interventions focusing on emotional well-being and social skills.
* Promote positive relationships between students and staff.
* Help make lessons accessible and inclusive for all students.
* Track student progress and share feedback with teachers and support staff.

A candidate for SEMH Teaching Assistant should have:

* A relevant qualification in education, psychology, or a related field (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ).
* Experience supporting children with SEMH needs, either in a school, alternative provision, or youth work setting.
* Understanding of the primary curriculum and adapting learning for children with SEMH challenges.
* Knowledge of behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques.
* A strong understanding of attachment theory and trauma-informed practices.
* Patience, resilience, and a nurturing approach to working with children.
* Great communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
* An updated CV (covering the last 10 years, with no unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or willing to apply for one).

What We Offer:

* Competitive pay rates based on your experience.
* A variety of teaching opportunities in different schools.
* Support from a dedicated consultant throughout your placement.
* The chance to work in schools that value quality teaching.

Safeguarding Commitment

This role requires a strong understanding of safeguarding and child protection. Successful applicants must satisfy all background and safer recruitment checks, including an enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
