Overview

We are looking for a dynamic, compassionate, caring and motivated Elderly Care Consultant to join our friendly and enthusiastic team. The successful candidate will join nineteen substantive consultants in providing the highest quality care possible for older patients across our hospital sites and the respective communities of Wakefield and North Kirklees.

Job responsibilities

* Ward rounds and attendance at dedicated MDT meetings
* Provision of specialist opinion
* Participation in outpatient or virtual clinics or home visits
* Participation in teaching and training
* Regular audit, data collection and quality improvement work to ensure ongoing improvements in the care of frail older people occurs
* Maintain overview of all ward patients
* Actively participating and facilitating discharges on the ward
* Support and supervise junior doctors on the ward
* Liaise with Same Day Emergency Care ANPs if necessary
* Contribute in the electronic and verbal handover of patients

This post also includes on-call responsibilities as part of a dedicated Elderly Care on-call rota. Working arrangements currently consist of the following: scheduled on-call duties in the evenings, weekends and overnight with varying on-call load, and a 1.5 PA on-call element within a 10PA job plan. On-call commitments for those working less than full time depend on your chosen percentage (75% or 100%).

Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) are included in the core 10PA timetable, with potential for additional SPA or DCC time as skills and service needs evolve. Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership roles.

Job description & responsibilities (detailed)

This post is offered on a full time basis (10 PA) although less than full-time applications will be considered. The department has a mixture of full and part-time consultants to ensure a supportive environment for all. All our consultants work cross-site, but the successful applicant will work predominantly at either Pinderfields or Dewsbury and District Hospital.

The Elderly Medicine Department within the Trust consists of 17 substantive Consultants and is supported by Associate Specialist, Specialist Registrars, Core Medical Trainees, VTS Trainees, FY2s and FY1s.

This post is associated with a number of different specialty interests including Community, Ortho-Geriatrics, Parkinsons and acute frailty.

This post includes on-call responsibilities as part of a dedicated Elderly Care on-call rota with current arrangements described above.

Person Specification

GMC Registration – Essential

* Please state your full GMC number.
* Full GMC Registration with licence to practise
* Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in Elderly Medicine or within 6 months of obtaining CCT (or CESR / equivalent)

Personal Attributes – Essential

* Ability to contribute to the development of the Trust and its services.
* Able to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and patients.
