Overview
The School of History, Law and Social Sciences at Bangor University is home to a vibrant and diverse range of disciplines at the heart of the University’s arts and humanities provision. Alongside its strong reputation for research and teaching excellence, the School plays a leading role in advancing the University’s civic and public engagement agenda at local, regional, national, and international levels.
Our staff includes experts across fields such as International Law, Intellectual Property Law, Contract Law, Procurement Law, Family Law, Land Law, Human Rights Law, Public Law, Criminal Law, and Clinical Legal Education. Their expertise informs our teaching, enabling students to develop a deep understanding of contemporary legal systems and issues from a global perspective.
The School also has a thriving doctoral community, a strong record of securing external funding for postgraduate research, and an active programme of research seminars for both students and staff.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic, supportive, and collegial faculty, recognised for excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship across Law, Criminology, Criminal Justice, and Policing.
Purpose of the Job
1. To teach Law at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
2. Contribute to the management and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including organising assessments and contributing to quality assurance and accreditation processes (particularly if acting as module coordinator).
3. To develop and enhance teaching materials in line with best pedagogical practices.
4. To provide academic and pastoral support to students.
5. To contribute to the administrative functions of the School as directed by the Head of School, such as membership of School committees or task groups.
6. Play an active role in student recruitment activities and the promotion of the School’s academic programmes.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
7. Plan, prepare and deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, and tutorials that respond to a range of student needs, learning styles, and class sizes.
8. Inspire and engage students in active learning, providing timely, constructive, and meaningful feedback.
9. Keep up to date with developments in the field of Law, as well as broader educational and technological advancements.
10. Act as personal tutor to a number of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, offering academic and personal guidance.
11. Engage in scholarly activity to enhance teaching quality and support institutional strategies related to education and student experience.
12. Contribute to the management and administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including organising assessments and contributing to quality assurance and accreditation processes (particularly if acting as module coordinator).
13. Undertake additional administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Head of School, such as membership of School committees or task groups.
14. Play an active role in recruitment activities and the promotion of the School’s academic programmes.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
15. The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.
16. The post holder will be expected to comply with the University’s equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University’s Welsh Language Scheme.
17. Ensure continued development of personal knowledge and skills to ensure that teaching reflects current best practice.
18. The post holder has a general and legal duty of care in relation to health, safety and wellbeing and must take all reasonable steps to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for themselves and for other members of staff, students and visitors affected by their actions or inactions. The post holder is also required to comply with all applicable health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
19. The post holder must comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of their responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of their post.

Qualifications/Training
Essential
20. A PhD (or near completion) in Law, a related discipline or relevant experience.
Desirable
21. A recognised teaching qualification in higher education (e.g. PGCert, FHEA) completed or near completion.
Experience/Knowledge and Skills
Essential
22. Ability to deliver engaging and inclusive teaching using a variety of methods.
Examples of modules that need to be covered include Legal and Justice Process, Public Law, Criminal Law and Legal Skills.
23. Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines.
24. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
25. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
26. Proficiency in using digital tools and learning technologies to support teaching and learning.
27. A commitment to providing academic and pastoral support to students.
28. Willingness to contribute to student recruitment and outreach activities.
29. Administrative competence and attention to detail.
30. The ability to speak and write Welsh fluently in a wide variety of situations is essential for this post.
