About The Role

Do you want to be at the forefront of one of the world’s most ambitious sustainability initiatives?

Balfour Beatty has created iconic buildings and infrastructure all over the world over the past 115 years, redefining excellence and setting the industry benchmark with every project. As a result, alongside several consortium partners, Balfour Beatty has been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first‑of‑a‑kind fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage, a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Lean & Business Improvement Specialist will contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project at our site in Redcar and Cleveland. The role supports the Net Zero Teesside Project as a key member of the Production HUB delivering Lean as a Service. Improvement projects focus on process improvements that drive productivity, improve safety, and create effective and efficient ways of delivery.


What you’ll be doing


General and Task Management

* Analyse current work practices within the area of responsibility to identify improvement opportunities and educate colleagues on how to improve business processes and deliverables.
* Develop and test solutions, deploy new ways of working.
* Participate in the delivery and management of the Rhythm of the Business process for project delivery (SIC, CP & TMR) go/no‑go decisions.
* Perform workplace audits and streamline processes within the area of responsibility.
* Process mapping, value stream mapping, identify inefficiencies in productivity with a focus on layouts, sequencing and programme improvements.
* Recommend to management changes that can cut waste from operating procedures.
* Deploy appropriate methodologies to support problem solving, ensure effective escalation.
* Demonstrate performance excellence behaviours and champion performance excellence.
* Support the business in establishing “best practice” methods and share them with the wider industry.
* Implement standard work, visual factory and error‑proofing.
* Provide continuous training and development for the project team and supply chain partners.
* Perform root‑cause analysis to identify potential issues and create innovative solutions.
* Conduct time and motion studies to support productivity improvements.
* Track completion of tasks and record performance on appropriate systems.
* Promote high standards through personal example throughout the team.
* Conduct risk assessments of processes and tasks for the project.
* Improve safety, quality, delivery, productivity, cost and efficiency wherever possible.
* Facilitate continuous improvement implementation and employee involvement.
* Communicate effectively with various levels of the business to educate in lean methodologies and influence others proactively.
* Ensure improvement initiatives are aligned to business requirements.
* Support building a culture of engagement across the business to provide a highly energized team flexible to changing needs.


People Management

* Support and coach less experienced team members.
* Foster growth of operational excellence behaviours through coaching, mentoring and training.
* Develop strategic delivery and supply chain partners on site to ensure they are part of the improvement process and culture.


Relationship Management

* Liaise and communicate with other departments, customers, suppliers and other service providers.
* Maintain an effective interface with other departmental staff.
* Provide feedback to the Management team to share ideas and improve operations; recommend, support and implement continuous improvement activities and process improvements.
* Promote high standards through personal example across project teams.
* Ensure compliance with Health & Safety regulations, Quality and Environmental standards, and all other company policies and procedures.


Skills & Attributes

* Understand lean principles, tools and techniques.
* Awareness of ISO9001, ISO44001 and ISO18404 would be an advantage.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to present data effectively.
* Analytical and problem‑solving skills.
* Understanding of cost and financial impacts.
* Ability to work on own initiative.


Qualifications & Experience Levels

* Relevant business, commercial, manufacturing or engineering degree (preferred, not required).
* Experience applying lean tools and techniques within construction, continuous improvement, problem‑solving, process improvement and Poka Yoke (error‑proofing) techniques.
* Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or equivalent qualification.
* Substantial process improvement experience with demonstrated knowledge.
* Planning and prioritising activities.
* Assertive, resilient and welcoming change.
* Proactively engages interest and participation of others, collaborative approach.
* Shows moral courage, openness and honesty in all dealings.
* Ability to make and manage good relationships.
