Job Title: Biomedical Scientist (Band 6)

Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Band 6 Biomedical Scientist to join our Cellular Pathology Laboratory at Altnagelvin Hospital. This essential role contributes to the delivery of a high-quality, cost-effective laboratory service encompassing Histopathology, Diagnostic Cytology, Andrology, and mortuary services, ensuring compliance with UKAS accreditation standards.
The post-holder will work closely with the Clinical Lead and BMS Service Manager to deliver routine and specialist analytical procedures, develop and maintain laboratory protocols, and ensure robust quality management and health & safety practices. Responsibilities include supervising Band 5 staff, supporting training and development, participating in clinical governance, and contributing to ongoing service improvement through audit, CPD, and SOP maintenance.
Excellent communication is vital, with the role requiring regular liaison with pathologists, clinical teams, and laboratory staff. The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong planning and organizational skills, effectively managing their workload in a busy diagnostic setting. An extended working day may be required to support service needs.
Applicants must be HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientists with a specialist diploma in Cellular Pathology and a minimum of 1 year’s post-registration experience, or have held a Band 6 role in Cellular Pathology for 3 of the last 6 years. A full UK driving licence and access to transport is required unless exempt under disability provisions.
