The Trust: Horizon Leisure Centres is a leisure trust operating since 1997, with centres in Waterlooville, Havant and Guildford. We are passionate about health and wellbeing and are committed to making an outstanding positive impact on our customers and within our local community. Our mission is to support and inspire our local communities to live healthier and happier lives by providing affordable access to sport and leisure facilities to all. The Role: As a Trustee of Horizon, you will play a key role in providing strategic leadership and governance to our charity. Working alongside fellow Trustees and the Senior Leadership Team, you will ensure the charity achieves its mission of fostering happier, healthier communities. You will also help oversee the delivery of high-quality services, safeguard financial sustainability, and ensure we effectively meet the diverse needs of the community we serve. Key Responsibilities for Trustees Contributing actively to the board of Trustees’ in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and evaluating performance. Ensuring that the charity complies with its constitution, charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations, works to fulfil its charitable objects and applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects. Ensuring the effective and efficient management and administration of the charity. What does the role involve? Attend monthly Board Meetings. Oversee the financial management of the Trust's resources. Monitor the work and activities of the Trust including approval of the annual accounts. Evaluate the Trust's performance in relation to its objectives and targets. Appoint the Chief Executive Officer and monitor their performance. Be an ambassador for the Trust at functions, external events, meetings and in your own networks. Setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets. Delegate authority to the Chief Executive Officer. Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees' role in giving firm strategic direction to the Trust. Skills and competencies : Essential Criteria Demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship. Demonstrate commitment to the Trust’s objectives, aims and values and willingness to devote time to carry out responsibilities. Exhibit independent judgement, political impartiality and the ability to think creatively in the context of the organisation and external environment. Ability to balance tact and diplomacy with willingness to challenge and constructively criticise. Provide strategic vision and direction. A commitment to the mission, values, and objectives of Horizon. Strong strategic thinking and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. A willingness to collaborate and work as part of a team. Desirable Criteria Knowledge of the leisure, sports, or charitable sectors. Prior experience as a Trustee or Board member. Applicants with knowledge or experience in the following areas are particularly encouraged: Health and wellbeing Not for profit organisations Corporate governance Medical and social services Legal Financial HR Sales & Marketing Time Commitment 10 board meetings per year and the AGM, plus extra ordinary meetings as required. It is anticipated you will spend roughly half a day per month fulfilling Trustee duties. Reasons to become a Trustee You will: Have fun!
