Why Teaching on the Isle of Man might just be the Right Choice for You

Are you looking for a teaching career that offers professional fulfilment, a genuine work-life balance, and a quality of life that is second to none? At St Ninian's High School and across the Isle of Man, we offer a unique educational landscape that empowers teachers to excel in the classroom while enjoying the benefits of Island living.

A Special Place to Live and Work

The Isle of Man occupies a central position in the Irish Sea and the British Islesbetween England and Irelandand is accessible by sea and by air, with over 200 weekly flights off Island. We are blessed with an extensive coastline, stunning natural landscapes, and unspoilt beaches, making it a popular holiday destination.

Measuring 33 miles long and 13 miles wide, with a population of approximately 85,000 people, the Island has a diverse landscape, including glens, forests, and beaches. The Isle of Man is a self-governing country but has always had and continues to have very strong ties to the UK and Ireland. The Island offers an excellent education and an NHS-style free healthcare system.

The Island has a strong national Manx identity and culture that is community-spirited and celebrated with cultural, food and drink, and sporting festivals throughout the year, including the world-renowned TT races and the Manx Telecom Parish Walk. Those living on the Island benefit from an unbeatable quality of life and great lifestyle opportunities. We are one of the safest places to live in Europe and are the only Island Nation in the world to be awarded UNESCO Biosphere status, making it a truly unique location to live and work.

A Professional Journey: Year 7 to A Level

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching at St Ninian's is the opportunity to work within a true 1118 secondary model. Unlike many regional models, our teachers have the privilege of guiding students through their entire secondary journey. You will gain invaluable experience delivering the curriculum from the foundation of Year 7, through the rigours of GCSE, and onto the academic heights of A Level. This continuity allows you to build lasting professional relationships and see the long-term impact of your expertise.

A Balanced Professional Life

We believe that the best teachers are those who have the time to reflect, plan, and recharge.

* A 35-Hour Working Week: Your time is respected. Our teaching staff benefit from a 35-hour working week supported by a robust Working Time Agreement. This ensures that your professional commitments are managed fairly and transparently.
* Supportive Quality Assurance: We are proud of our culture of self-review. On the Isle of Man, we operate under a supportive internal QA framework. We focus on professional growth and collaborative improvement, providing a stimulating environment for development without the high-stakes stress of Ofsted inspections.

World-Class Facilities and Competitive Rewards

Teaching on the Island is a highly valued profession. We offer competitive salaries and provide well-resourced, stimulating learning environments. At St Ninian's, you will find modern facilities and the latest technology (including our integrated Arbor and ePraise systems) to support your "Teaching for Learning" goals.

Life Beyond the Classroom

The Isle of Man's designation as a UNESCO Biosphere means that when the school day ends, you are minutes away from breathtaking rugged coastlines, peaceful glens, and mountain views.

* Safety and Community: The Island consistently ranks as one of the safest places to live in the British Isles, with a strong sense of community and excellent healthcare and local services.
* Short Commutes: Say goodbye to hours of traffic. Most of our staff enjoy short, scenic commutes, leaving more time for family, hobbies, and the Island's vibrant outdoor lifestyle.
* Adventure on your Doorstep: Whether you are an avid hiker, a sailor, or a fan of world-class motorsport like the TT, the Island offers an unparalleled playground for those who love the outdoors.
