We are seeking a Software Engineering Lead (based primarily in Whiteley and surrounding client sites) to join our team and drive delivery of new functionality and transformations for air traffic control systems.
The Role
The Software Engineering Lead will manage a multi‑functional team delivering a complex programme of transformation and functional changes. You will own the delivery of software design through to operational deployment and ongoing technical support, reporting to the engineering programme manager and the NATS customer.
You will additionally be responsible for managing schedules, costs, change requests, new functions and resource planning across multiple delivery points. You will work closely with NATS to ensure long‑term resourcing and viable succession plans, maintaining stability throughout the system life‑cycle.
Typical Duties
* Plan and deliver against agreed software targets.
* Manage day‑to‑day activities across a multi‑disciplined team.
* Ensure engineering processes and software assurance standards are followed.
* Contribute to architecture, design and software solutions/recommendations.
* Lead change and release management.
* Manage technical risk and opportunity.
* Liaise with other disciplines (systems engineering, formal test) and provide team leadership.
* Work package management.
* Provide weekly reporting – Critical Thread Review meetings.
Required Skills
* Proven track record delivering change to national critical infrastructure systems.
* Experience leading teams through the complete delivery life‑cycle from bid to operational delivery.
* Experience with systems engineering, software development, integration and test, using Waterfall and V‑model development.
* Experience with development environments for 1GL through 3GL generation languages.
* Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to provide clear technical direction.
* Ability to work cross‑functionally and collaborate with stakeholders.
* Excellent verbal and written communication.
* Strong time‑management and organisational skills.
Desired Skills
* Experience developing software solutions using 1GL to 3GL languages such as ADA, C, C++.
* Experience delivering real‑time or safety‑related software.
* Knowledge of COTS integration technologies (Apache Camel, Kafka) and Atlassian tools (Jira, Confluence).
* Knowledge of configuration management in a software engineering environment.
