Opportunity Overview
NHS Orkney is seeking applications from qualified individuals to join our Staff Bank as Locum Consultants in Public Health Medicine / Public Health. This role is open to both medical and non-medical applicants meeting consultant-level criteria. Medical candidates will be paid as a Consultant, while non-medical candidates will be paid as Agenda for Change Band 8d.
Successful candidates may be contacted periodically for locum work, which can be full-time or part-time, including participation in Health Protection on-call duties and other responsibilities as needed. Specific objectives will be tailored to each case.
Role Responsibilities
The roles involve providing senior leadership and expert advice in public health across various functions within an island health board context. Key areas include:
* Health Protection (including on-call duties)
* Immunisation and Screening Programmes
* Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Services
* Development and quality assurance of public health reports, policies, and governance
* Public health input into service improvement, strategy, and emergency planning
* Deputising for the Director of Public Health
* Additional senior public health duties as required
Applicants should demonstrate broad public health expertise across all domains and flexibility in work arrangements. Some tasks may be performed remotely, subject to agreement.
Current Requirement – July 2025
This position involves providing on-site health protection cover during the Island Games from 10th to 18th July 2025, with additional remote support. Accommodation and travel support may be provided. The role may close early if sufficient applications are received. The position requires a Disclosure Scotland check.
