Software Assurance Engineer 12 Month Contract Based: Barrow Hourly Rate: £50.00 PAYE or £67.47 Umbrella inside IR35 Hybrid working Full time – 37 hours Monday – Friday Overview BAE Systems is seeking an experienced Principal Software Engineer (Software Assurance) to play a key role within our Submarines Engineering function. This is a senior technical role for a motivated engineer who enjoys working autonomously, influencing technical direction, and mentoring others while delivering high‑integrity software solutions for complex, safety‑critical systems. Responsibilities Leading and contributing to software requirements, design, development, testing, integration, and release Conducting complex technical analysis, investigations, and fault diagnosis Producing and reviewing software specifications, designs, implementations, and test artefacts Providing software assurance through robust configuration management and change control Performing and leading code and document reviews Supporting software release management activities Planning and reporting progress at both personal and work‑package level Acting as a technical authority in design and test reviews Supporting internal and external reviews as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) Coaching and mentoring junior engineers and supporting overall team capability Liaising with customers and supporting identification of future business opportunities Skills & Experience Strong experience across multiple phases of the software lifecycle Expertise in software assurance, quality, and governance within complex or regulated environments A solid understanding of software metrics, measurements, and continuous improvement The ability to work autonomously on complex technical problems Experience coaching, mentoring, and supporting other engineers Confidence engaging with stakeholders at all levels, including customers Awareness of business strategy and relevant legal and regulatory obligation Clearance: BPSS SC clearance If you would like to be considered for this role please don't hesitate to click apply or call Levi Jackson on 0161 694 9192 for more information.
