Associate or Senior Associate Sustainability Consultant (Carbon)

Hoare Lea is an award‑winning engineering consultancy that delivers innovative solutions for buildings. We are seeking a creative and driven Associate or Senior Associate Sustainability Consultant with expertise in carbon assessment.
About the Role
The role is based in our London office and is part of the Sustainability Group. You will work alongside specialist engineers and consultants to provide technical leadership and support the London Sustainability team.
Key Responsibilities
* Play a supporting role in the leadership of the London Sustainability team, sharing line management responsibilities and accelerating junior staff development.
* Specialise in whole‑life carbon assessment and management, providing in‑depth analysis, guidance, and innovative solutions to reduce carbon footprints.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to embed sustainable practices and ensure compliance with evolving carbon regulations and standards.
* Take ownership and deliver large‑scale projects with industry‑leading clients.
* Manage and prioritise the workload of a project team and report resourcing requirements to the project lead.
* Contribute to the development of junior team members through mentoring and training.
* Support in production of fee proposals and invoicing.
* Lead workshops with clients and design teams, communicating information clearly.
* Undertake modelling and analysis including embodied carbon, circular economy opportunities, building performance simulation, operational energy use, energy generation, and overheating.
* Lead the development of sustainability and energy strategies.
* Lead the delivery of environmental assessments (e.g. BREEAM, WELL, HQM) from early design stages through to completion.
* Drive the realisation of net‑zero whole‑life carbon in projects.
* Collaborate with the Sustainability Group on research and development initiatives to stay at the cutting edge of knowledge.
* Potentially contribute to industry guidance and publications.

* Energy strategies
* Building Regulations Part L assessments using Elmhurst and IES
* NABERS UK modelling
* In‑use energy modelling and assessment
* Dynamic modelling for thermal comfort and overheating risk assessments
* BREEAM and HQM assessments
* Bespoke sustainability charters
* Health and wellbeing strategies and certification
* Production of planning documents (sustainability statements, energy statements, whole‑life carbon reports, circular economy statements)
* Net‑zero carbon strategies and embodied carbon calculations
To Be Successful
* Experience working within sustainability consultancy.
* Degree in an applicable field and passion for creating sustainable solutions.
* Confidence in leading sustainability workshops with design teams.
* Team player in a dynamic, progressive firm.
* Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for teamwork.
* Demonstrable experience working with clients, contractors, or architects in a design‑oriented role.
* Self‑awareness, open mind, and generosity.
* Experience supporting others' development.
