Quantum Base has invented the Q-ID, a world leading technology solution for anti-counterfeit, brand protection and security printing. Q-IDs cannot be photocopied, can be put on anything and can be authenticated with any smartphone. Our largest client is a prestigious security printer that is using Q-IDs for a government tax stamp programme. The first target markets are security printers, tax stamps and brand protection. Quantum Base is 11 years old and was founded by Professor Robert Young at Lancaster University. Our mission is to create a new global standard. See them in action here: https://youtu.be/br-f15t-qtQ
About the Role
We are looking for a senior, hands‑on engineer to accelerate the rollout of Quantum Base’s technology in real customer environments — taking customers from first conversation through live trials and into paying production. This is the first external hire into our Customer Implementation Function, so you will have real ownership and a big hand in shaping how it works.
Our technology sits across mobile, cloud, manufacturing, machine vision, ink and print, so you will be comfortable at the boundary between physical and digital, and confident in solving problems that aren’t yet in a playbook. You will establish efficient scalable processes and workflows and be comfortable/familiar with automation and AI. You will work closely with customers, our Commercial team, and the wider Quantum Base team, including:
* Partnering with the commercial team on sales opportunities as the senior technical voice
* Setting realistic expectations on risks, dependencies and timelines
* Owning technical onboarding to accelerate time‑to‑production without compromising quality
* Integrating our technology into customer systems and operational workflows
* Troubleshooting across hardware, software, manufacturing and integration points
* Building repeatable processes, tools and playbooks to scale parallel implementations
* Training customer teams to become production‑ready
* Feeding lessons back into our Platform and Materials teams
Location and Travel
You should be able to work from our Lancaster office at least 3 days a week (often 4 during active customer programmes) and be comfortable travelling regularly to UK and international customer sites, where trial work is hands‑on and close to the line, under real operational constraints.
Key Experience & Skills
* Experience implementing solutions that include hardware and software
* Significant applications engineering, field engineering, or implementation engineering experience, with strong troubleshooting instincts in live trials, pilots, commissioning or production ramp‑ups
* Solid software knowledge (mobile SDKs, cloud APIs) and able to bridge physical systems with software workflows
* Startup or scale‑up experience, with practical judgement under ambiguity and a track record of improving delivery so multiple customer programmes can run in parallel
* Confident across engineering, operations and IT stakeholders, with an ability to use AI for process, speed and execution
Nice to have experience
* Experience with vision systems, production or print lines, and QC systems
* Experience in the security printing, anti‑counterfeit or brand protection industries.
Benefits
* 30 days annual leave, plus public holidays.
* Relocation package available if you want to move to Lancaster.
* Cycle to Work scheme.
* Pension.
* Bonus.
* Participation in the company share scheme.
We’re continually updating and improving our benefits. If you are a senior engineer who likes being close to the real problem, working directly with customers and making complex systems work in production, we want to hear from you.
