Metrology Engineer – Dimensional Inspection
Closing Date: 10th June 2026.
Location: RG30 3RR, located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.
Package: £30,750 – £58,920 per annum depending on suitability, qualifications and experience.
Working pattern: AWE operates a 9‑day working fortnight. Flexible working requests will be considered.
The role involves developing and implementing inspection processes to certify the quality of nuclear weapon products. You will work with product development teams to decide appropriate metrology methods and oversee the use of measurement equipment.
Responsibilities
* Work with product development teams to identify metrology methods to suit product verification needs.
* Evaluate inspection technologies and select those most suitable.
* Develop and implement metrology and dimensional inspection methods and processes.
* Apply workshop experience to inspection quality tools and techniques, production activities and processes.
* Practice inspection, use inspection equipment and set up components/assemblies.
* Understand measurement uncertainty analysis.
* Interpret engineering drawings (GD&T) and technical specifications.
Required Qualifications
* Experience in Quindos and/or PC‑DMIS programming software.
* Experience of measurement from first principles using manual instruments.
* Experience of defining measurement processes and conducting inspections of first articles or single components.
Desired Additional Experience
* Knowledge or experience of surface metrology evaluation using tactile or optical instruments.
* Experience of introducing new metrology/inspection equipment.
* Experience of conducting Measurement System Analysis studies.
* Background in high‑precision manufacturing industry (ideally machining or similar production methods).
* Basic understanding of problem resolution and continuous improvement tools and techniques (e.g., accredited by Yellow Belt and Green Belt programmes).
* Knowledge of practical applications of 6‑sigma methodology.
