Role: Lead Cable Project Engineer, Consultant specializing in Solar PV, BESS, Gas Turbine, EfW and Grid Connection
Sector: Transmission
Location: Hybrid - Scotland (UK locations only; remote could be possible)
Start Date: September 2025 | Duration: Approx. 7 months
Clearance: BPSS (DBS/DS, Financial Probity, Employment History) + Medical Questionnaire & Proof of Right to Work in the UK
Base Location: Preference Glasgow, Perth, Inverness or Aberdeen
Occasional travel (less than 1 trip per month, duration ~2 nights) may be required to fulfil the role, with attendance at the Glasgow office or onsite.
Responsibilities
* Support design and deliver engineering on the LT17 Orkney to Caithness Link, with potential scope to support other HVAC Offshore projects within the portfolio.
* Involve in detail design reviews and HAZCON/HAZOP sessions supporting construction, installation, commissioning and project completion.
* Provide cable engineering support by reviewing cable system designs: evaluate technology options, underground cable routing, produce current rating calculations (CYMCAP) and assess interface requirements.
* Develop technical scopes and specifications for subsea and underground cable elements, including modifications to existing assets.
* Review cable system prequalification and type testing reports; verify contractor/consultant detailed underground cable designs; witness factory and site acceptance testing.
* Provide technical support to site teams to ensure quality of installations and cable commissioning activities.
* Evaluate tenders and procure/manage specialist services from consultants.
* Promote and manage safety within assigned projects through CDM procedures and practices; ensure project engineering compliance with company, HSE and industry regulations.
* Collaborate with Engineering Managers and Project Managers to identify and mitigate engineering and quality risks.
* Provide technical support on high-profile projects or technically complex issues.
Qualifications and Skills
* Experience in transmission-level cable projects, including document review, factory acceptance testing, installation and commissioning, ideally up to 400kV (subsea and land cable). Ability to assess issues and evaluate technical solutions.
* Understanding of legislation for Transmission network management for Assets and Projects, including Construction Design Management & Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations.
* Problem-solving mindset with the ability to address critical matters within project teams.
* Strong communication, diligence, and task prioritisation skills.
* Degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or relevant technical experience; ideally Chartered Engineer or working towards professional accreditation.
