Staff Nurse - Ward 5 General Surgery - Band 5
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to join our nursing team on ward 5. This is an excellent opportunity to gain a wide variety of knowledge and experience within a unit that includes both emergency and elective surgery.
Ward 5/SDCU/MIS STU is a general surgical unit which encompasses 4 different areas. 1 area has 12 inpatient surgical beds, there are a further 12 day case beds and also a surgical treatment unit. The unit looks after patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical specialties including major bowel surgery, breast and gynaecology procedures, ophthalmology, Urology and ENT.
We can offer a range of working opportunities including full and part time hours covering a variety of shift patterns over a 7 day rota including early shifts, late shifts, long days and some rotation onto nights. Our nursing teams are focused on the 6 C's and we aim to provide a high quality service in a safe environment where the needs of each patient are met in a professional and holistic manner.
We offer flexible working patterns on a roster basis which includes a well balanced combination of days, nights and weekends in order to meet the needs of our patients and provide a fair and equal working environment for the whole team.
Main duties of the job
The role of a Staff Nurse is to support in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of high quality nursing care. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the Staff Nurse will ensure patients receive the highest level of care, delivered using a holistic, patient-focused approach, while ensuring high standards of documentation are maintained.
The successful applicant will possess excellent communication skills, team working skills and some knowledge of surgical procedures to join our busy unit. We will support your development in the post through personal development planning, excellent training opportunities and will support you to broaden your experience, skills and knowledge in the rotation into the orthopaedic ward areas.

Qualifications
* Registered Nurse (Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC)
* Understanding of NMC Code, safeguarding and consent; working knowledge of NHS values and standards
* Post-registration course relevant to clinical area
Knowledge & Skills
* Able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care; effective documentation skills
* Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to build therapeutic relationships
* Ability to work within a team and take delegated responsibility, understanding of professional boundaries
* Able to prioritise and manage time effectively in a busy clinical setting
* Confident in using electronic patient records and digital systems
* Compassionate, reliable, committed to person-centred care; demonstrates resilience and emotional maturity
* Proficient in clinical procedures relevant to the area (e.g., IV administration, catheterisation)
* Experience liaising with families and multiagency professionals
* Evidence of continuous professional development

* Evidence of recent acute or relevant clinical experience (including student placements)
