An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Rotational Band 6 Occupational Therapist within the Orthopaedic Therapy team. The rotation includes the Trauma & Orthopaedic wards at Barnet Hospital and the Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Chase Farm Hospital. We are looking for a dynamic therapist to join our friendly and supportive team, consisting of experienced Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and Therapy Support Workers.
This post offers a varied role for the successful candidate, providing opportunities to develop knowledge and skills as an Occupational Therapist and support the OT Team Lead in service improvement tasks. The therapy team is integral to the ward, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to assess and treat patients throughout their hospital stay.
Within the Elective Orthopaedic Therapy service, the post involves working within the newly developed Hip & Knee Arthroplasty Ambulatory pathway, including a vital role within the pre-operative assessment service for this patient group. The caseload includes elective procedures such as spinal, shoulder, and foot and ankle surgeries. In the Trauma & Orthopaedic team at Barnet, you will assist patients in returning home safely following traumatic injuries, including fractures of the upper limb, lower limb, and spine. You will provide essential rehabilitation to improve patients' function post-operatively, aiming to regain their baseline independence and quality of life.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
1. Manage and prioritize your own caseload effectively, utilizing clinical reasoning, organizational, and prioritization skills, with support from the Team Lead OT.
2. Carry out comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessments, including complex standardised assessments and risk assessments.
3. Plan and implement individual Occupational Therapy treatment programmes aligned with patient needs and goals.
4. Evaluate treatment outcomes and use reflective practice to enhance patient care.
5. Demonstrate sound clinical reasoning skills, especially when considering equipment and adaptations to maximize independence.
6. Be flexible to fluctuating priorities and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment.
7. Demonstrate effective discharge planning skills.
8. Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and MDT colleagues, including participation in daily board rounds and meetings.
9. Teach, supervise, and appraise junior staff and students, with support from experienced senior staff.
10. Contribute to developing the Orthopaedic service through quality improvement and service development initiatives.
This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours) position. The post holder will be required to work bank holidays and weekends, in line with the department's 7-day working policy.
The Band 6 Occupational Therapist will undertake all clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner, adhering to the trust's standards, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities include managing a defined caseload, providing advanced therapy assessments and treatments, and communicating effectively with other professionals and stakeholders. The role also involves supervising and teaching junior staff and students, and actively participating in service improvement projects.
