Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician 2024 - 2026
Full-time 37.5 hours per week. Fixed Term/Secondment for 24 months.
We require an enthusiastic, hardworking individual to train as a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (PTPT).
Applicants must possess a minimum of 4 GCSEs grade 9-4 or equivalent, including Maths, English, and 2 Science subjects (to include Chemistry), to meet the entry requirements for the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles & Practice for Pharmacy Technicians. Dual or Triple Science including Chemistry is acceptable.
You will receive training in pharmaceutical skills, including providing pharmaceutical care to in-patients and out-patients, dispensing prescriptions, undertaking over-the-counter sales, providing counselling on medication use, and participating in medicine reconciliation duties.
The successful candidate will attend college on a day-release basis for two years. Protected study time is allocated, but a commitment to study in your own time is expected.
This is an Advanced Apprenticeship scheme; funding is available only for those without a Level 4 qualification or above (e.g., a degree in a relevant pharmacy-related subject). Applicants with such qualifications will need to self-fund the course.

The role involves carrying out pharmaceutical technical duties in the Pharmacy Department and wards under the supervision of the Chief Pharmacist and Pharmacy General Services Manager. Responsibilities include:
1. Providing a safe and effective dispensing service.
2. Delivering patient-focused pharmacy services to designated clinical areas and supporting medicines management and risk strategies.
3. Completing drug histories under supervision.
4. Assessing patients’ medicines for safety and contributing to schemes involving patients’ own medicines.
5. Developing skills for active contribution to discharge schemes and providing services to nominated wards.
6. Supporting practice research within the pharmacy department.
This is a rotational post; in the community setting, a car is required for home visits.
The contract runs from 1st September 2025 to 29th August 2027. Internal staff may be seconded for this period, with entry to the second year upon successful completion of the first.
Salary scale – Band 4 Annex 21 (agenda for change). Existing internal Band 2 & 3 Pharmacy Assistants will be paid at band 3.
Working hours: 37.5 hours per week over 7 days, including participation in late-night rotas and bank holidays.
