2-year Fixed Term Contract - Travelling across the network

40 Hours per week

Travelling to our York Training Centre is required (accommodation available)

Start date 14 September 2026

You might not see many women in engineering roles like this, but that is changing and this could be your opportunity to step into it.

When something isn’t right with the gas in someone’s home, you are the person who can help make it safe. You’ll figure out what’s happening and take action to fix the problem, and keep customers reassured throughout. It’s a role that takes technical skill, but also confidence, calm thinking, good judgement, and clear communication.

Responsibilities

As a Level 3 Customer Engineering Apprentice in gas networks, you'll blend classroom learning with hands‑on experience. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers in customers homes, while building your knowledge and skills at our York Training Centre.

* Investigate situations and determine the right next steps.
* Work carefully and make good decisions.
* Learn by doing and get involved in the practical side of the job.
* Work through problems and find a way forward.
* Show up ready to learn and be dependable.
* Take responsibility for your work and follow through with care.

As you develop, you will take on the work carried out by our Service Beyond the Meter team – from repairs, maintenance to installations in customer homes. You’ll also support people in more vulnerable situations, such as older or unwell individuals, or those unsure how to fix their boiler. It’s about listening, explaining clearly, and ensuring they feel safe in their own home.

You don’t need to have it all figured out from day one. This is a role where you will grow in confidence, build practical skills, and develop within a strong support network. After two years, you’ll be ready to step into the role fully, using your skills to support customers when it matters most.

What you’ll need to get started

* Ready to take your first steps into a career in gas engineering.
* Aged 18 or over by the start of the programme.
* GCSE Maths, English, and a Science at grades 4 to 9, or equivalent.
* A full UK manual driving licence.
* Live within 45 minutes of the advertised location.
* Finished all other apprenticeships by the time you start.

This is a practical role, so you will need to be comfortable with the following:

* Wearing the required PPE.
* Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Using tools and equipment.
* Following our safety equipment policies.

Why join NGN

* 25 days of annual leave, plus recognised bank holidays and 2 extra half‑days over the Christmas period.
* Generous stakeholder pension scheme, doubling your contribution, up to 10%.
* Flexible benefits and salary sacrifice options, including discounts on UK attractions, gym memberships, restaurants, experience days, and access to a Virtual GP service.
* Family‑friendly policies, including up to 6 weeks of paternity leave and 6 months of full pay for maternity leave (for eligible employees), plus shared parental leave and more.
