Methods Business and Digital Technology Limited
Methods is a £100M+ IT Services Consultancy partnering with central government departments and agencies to transform public sector operations in the UK. Established over 30 years ago and UK-based, we focus on transformation, digital delivery, and collaboration, creating end-to-end business and technical solutions that are people-centred, safe, and future-ready.
Our human touch distinguishes us from other consultancies, system integrators, and software houses—placing people, technology, and data at our core. We aim to create value and sustainability for our clients, staff, communities, and the planet.
We support our clients' project success through collaboration, sharing skills, and solving problems. At Methods, we enjoy our work, embrace mistakes, and learn from them.
Primarily focused on the public sector, Methods is expanding its private sector client base. We became part of the Alten Group in early 2022.
Role Description
Our Technical Delivery and Software Engineering portfolio has seen significant growth. Our goal is to make Methods a go-to for technical delivery across government. We are expanding our capacity and capability by recruiting more permanent staff, building a foundation for sustained, profitable growth. We work in line with government and industry standards, platform-agnostic, and recommend the best tools to meet business and user needs.
As a Technical Architect, you’ll be involved throughout project lifecycles—from initial reports or proposals (including pre-sales support) to transition, design, delivery, and knowledge transfer. You will define technical and solution approaches for digital services and engage with stakeholders.
Your responsibilities include technical areas (design, delivery, assurance) and non-technical areas (stakeholder and client expectation management, line management, innovation). You will oversee architecture across multiple domains and engineering outcomes throughout the full service and project lifecycle. This accounts for about 80% of your time; the rest involves growing our architecture and engineering capabilities, participating in communities of practice, and contributing to pre-sales activities.
Requirements
* Define, lead, and assure the delivery of architectural artefacts on client projects, including technology roadmaps, vision statements, high-level solution designs, low-level designs, estimations, and solution options reports across multiple views and frameworks such as NCSC, TOGAF, Cloud Adoption Frameworks, etc.
* Be a hands-on leader responsible for assurance and validation of technical deliverables, with knowledge of modern public cloud platforms and software engineering techniques.
* Own and produce designs/documentation to support business decisions and present them to clients for positive outcomes.
* Experience with notation tools like C4, ArchiMate, UML, BPMN, etc.
* Facilitate and manage Solution Architecture Boards or similar governance review boards to ensure design alignment.
* Review lower-level design architectures, supplier proposals, and delivery artefacts.
* Develop and define governance frameworks within projects and organizations, obtaining technical and business approvals.
* Build strong relationships with senior technical and delivery staff, promoting trust and advocacy.
* Influence team work aligned with delivery methodologies, coach junior colleagues, and provide technical leadership.
* Identify opportunities for component reuse and service pattern standardization across portfolios and government contexts.
* Promote technology and vendor neutrality, making evidence-based decisions and explaining them clearly.
* Make decisions involving high risk and complexity, recommending mitigations as needed.
* Conduct technical knowledge transfer, mentoring, and project assurance activities.
* Support pre-sales efforts with solution summaries, designs, estimates, and presentations.
* Participate in and lead Communities of Practice, especially in Cloud and Technical Architecture, mentoring colleagues.
* Support recruitment and management activities, including interviewing and mentoring.
This role requires or involves willingness to undergo Security Clearance, including completing a Baseline Personnel Security Standard check. Details will be discussed at interview.
