Your new role
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Legal Adviser to join a high ‑ profile public sector regulatory body on a 12 ‑ month fixed ‑ term basis (with potential for secondment).
The role sits within a central legal function and involves leading on the provision of complex legal advice across a wide range of regulatory and public law matters. You will work closely with senior leaders, policy teams and external advisers, supporting strategic decision ‑ making in a fast ‑ moving and politically sensitive environment.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Acting as a lead lawyer on multiple, high ‑ value legal matters running in parallel
2. Advising on public law, statutory interpretation, regulatory powers, enforcement activity and decision ‑ making
3. Providing advice on areas such as human rights, consumer protection, equality legislation and information law
4. Managing and supervising junior lawyers onplex advisory and contentious matters
5. Leading engagement with external legal advisers, including counsel, and overseeing delivery, quality and value for money
6. Supporting the effective operation of the in ‑ house legal function, including training, guidance and legal risk management
This role offers exposure at the most senior levels of an organisation with a nationally significant remit, and the chance to shape how legal advice is delivered in a complex regulatory context.
What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this role, you will be a qualified solicitor or barrister with significant pseudostratification experience in public law and/or a regulatory environment.
You will be able to demonstrate:
7. Strong experience advising onplex public law or regulatory matters
8. Confidence operating in politically sensitive environments and advising senior stakeholders
9. Experience in Public Law and at least two of the following areas: Public law and statutory duties Educational institutions Regulatory enforcement and investigations Human rights or equality legislation Consumer protection law Interpretation of regulatory frameworks or licence conditions
10. Excellent written and verbalmunication skills, with the ability to present clear, pragmatic advice
11. A collaborative leadership style and experience managing or mentoring junior lawyers
12. Strong judgement, adaptability and the ability to deliver high ‑ quality advice at pace
Experience within a specific regulated sector is helpful but not essential — transferable regulatory or public law experience is strongly weed.
