Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust seeks an Elderly Care Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to support acute elderly services. The post comprises 10 Programmed Activities (PA) per week, with potential additional PA on negotiation. Responsibilities include delivering high‑quality patient care, supporting surgical patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, and leading the development of POP services to improve care for patients presenting with emergency laparotomy surgery.
The postholder will be part of a 1:18 on‑call consultant rota for General Medicine and will cover weekday and weekend ward rounds in conjunction with an AMU Consultant. Saturday ward cover and review of surgical patients on demand are required.
Main duties of the job
* Provide high‑quality clinical care to elderly and general internal medicine patients, updating practice based on evidence and audit.
* Offer advice to colleagues in other specialties on elderly patients with surgical problems.
* Support teaching and training of nurses, junior medical staff, medical students, and contribute to postgraduate medical education.
* Serve as educational/clinical supervisor for junior doctors.
* Encourage audit and research activity.
* Actively participate in CPD and personal development plans.
* Lead on the POP service.
A medical secretariat will provide administrative support.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Work will be organized around Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). A full‑time consultant will spend 7.5 PAs on DCC and 2.5 PAs on SPA, including training, audit, and governance activities.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Basic Medical Degree.
* Full MRCP or equivalent.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric and General Internal Medicine via CCT (date within 6 months of interview), European Community Rights, or CESR.
Experience
* Evidence of higher specialist training in Elderly Care Medicine (or within 6 months of confirmed entry).
* Broad experience in Elderly Care Medicine equivalent to UK CCT requirements.
* Expert clinical advice on a range of problems.
* Full and independent responsibility for patient clinical care.
MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE
* Strong organisational and management skills; ability to lead within the Elderly Care Team.
* Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
* Strategic planning and sound judgement under conflicting pressures.
* Experience supervising junior medical staff (SpR/ST‑level).
* Ability to teach clinical and operative skills.
* Demonstrated leadership skills.
CLINICAL EFFECTIVENESS
* Apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
* Use evidence base and clinical audit to support decision‑making.
* Experience in research and publication.
PROFESSIONAL AND MULTI‑DISCIPLINARY TEAM WORKING
* Collaborative working within a multidisciplinary team.
* Effective communication with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, and agencies.

* Appropriate immigration status.
* Residence within 30 minutes of Manor Hospital.
* Full GMC registration and licensable.
* Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
* Enthusiastic, able to work under pressure, caring attitude to patients.
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national level.
