The Role
As a Contract Systems Engineer, you will take ownership of system lifecycle activities from concept through to retirement, ensuring robust requirements management, architecture development, and successful system integration. You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders, driving clarity, traceability and technical excellence throughout.
Key Responsibilities
Lifecycle Management
Plan and implement tailored system lifecycle models, managing all stages from concept to disposal. Lead and support design reviews, ensuring clear documentation of decisions and actions.
Requirements Engineering
Elicit, analyse, and define clear, traceable requirements aligned to stakeholder needs. Maintain validation, assumptions, and constraints across all levels while ensuring full lifecycle traceability.
System Architecture & Design
Develop and communicate system architectures, ensuring alignment to requirements, integration of subsystems, and appropriate test configurations.
Interface Management
Define, manage, and control system interfaces (internal and external) to maintain system integrity.
Integration, Verification & Validation
Plan and support integration activities, verification, and qualification testing. Lead formal system validation with acceptance authorities, ensuring traceability and compliance.
Tools & Data Management
Utilise requirements management tools to maintain configuration control, data integrity, and traceability across complex datasets.
Essential Skills & Experience
* Degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
* Proven experience in systems engineering and requirements management within complex environments
* Strong experience with requirements management tools and methodologies
* Experience handling large datasets with strong configuration and data control practices
* Solid background in system integration, verification, and test planning
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
* Experience working in secure or sensitive environments
* High proficiency with MS Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams)
Desirable Experience
* Experience in defence, aerospace, or other high-integrity sectors
* Knowledge of secure systems design / information assurance (UK MoD environments)
* Familiarity with electronic/electrical systems
* Experience with integration, qualification, and system testing activities
* Exposure to Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), reliability, and technical documentation
* Experience with Agile methodologies and tools such as Jira
* Familiarity with Jama Connect or similar requirements tools
* Understanding or experience of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
