Role Overview
Applications are invited to join a team of 5 Substantive Consultant Nephrologists (including this post) on the Wirral Peninsula. The new appointee will be expected to have a broad based nephrology background. Applicants with sub speciality skills / interest in medical PD insertion and home therapies would be welcomed but are not essential. The post holder will be employed by Wirral University Teaching Hospital (NHS) Foundation Trust but will also carry out work (including outpatient clinics and dialysis reviews) at the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust.
Responsibilities
* Take responsibility for outpatients: look after haemodialysis patients (~30 total) at The Clatterbridge Unit and Countess of Chester. Encourage running Haemodialysis Clinics during dialysis sessions, organisation up to the Consultant.
* On‑call: one week in five rota, cover all nephrology inpatients at Arrowe Park Hospital and reviews any inpatient referrals at Countess of Chester Hospital, daily ward rounds Mon‑Sun, and renal emergencies. Manage inpatient admissions for renal biopsies if needed.
* Inpatient workload: Arrowe Park 10 dedicated renal in‑patient beds with 10‑30 inpatients; Countess of Chester no nephrology in‑patient beds but 5‑15 patients at any time. Manage patients as Nephrologist of the Week.
Qualifications
* Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC.
* Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST in GIM or equivalent.
* Appropriate higher medical qualification such as MRCP.
* Desirable MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.
* Extensive experience in nephrology.
* Practical skills necessary for the insertion of temporary and permanent jugular venous access.
* Percutaneous renal biopsy.
* PD catheter insertion.
* Desirable Home therapies, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Organisational skills.
* Teaching experience / interest, ability to lead / teach.
* Ability to relate to patients / relatives.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Relevant experience in organisation and undertaking audit.
* Evidence of research and publications relevant to post.
