Assistant Headteacher (SENCO) – Alternative Provision
Salary: L4 – L10 (depending on experience)

We are seeking an exceptional and compassionate Assistant Headteacher (SENCO) to join our senior leadership team within our Alternative Provision. This is a pivotal role for an experienced SEND leader who is passionate about improving outcomes for pupils with complex needs, including SEMH, neurodiversity, trauma backgrounds, and disrupted educational histories.
As a key member of SLT, you will lead our SEND strategy, champion inclusive practice, and ensure high-quality, personalised provision for our most vulnerable learners.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide strategic leadership of SEND across the AP, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements and the SEND Code of Practice.
2. Lead and refine the AP’s SEND strategy, policy, and provision mapping.
3. Oversee the SEND register, EHCP processes, annual reviews, and statutory duties.
4. Develop personalised learning pathways and support reintegration with referring schools.
5. Lead multi-agency collaboration with CAMHS, social care, youth justice, Early Help, and therapeutic partners.
6. Support behaviour teams through trauma-informed and SEND-responsive approaches.
7. Line-manage support staff and intervention teams and lead high-quality CPD for staff.
8. Ensure strong quality assurance of SEND teaching, planning, and classroom practice.
9. Work closely with safeguarding colleagues and act as Deputy DSL when required.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
10. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
11. NASENCO qualification (or currently working towards it).
Experience
12. Proven experience as a SENCO or SEND leader.
13. Strong background working in AP, PRU, SEMH, or high needs settings.
14. Evidence of improving outcomes for pupils with SEND/SEMH.
15. Experience leading multi-agency work and completing EHCP statutory processes.
Skills & Personal Qualities
16. Deep understanding of SEND legislation, SEMH, and trauma-informed practices.
17. Excellent communication, organisation, and leadership skills.
18. Skilled in data analysis to drive school improvement.
19. Compassionate, resilient, reflective, and committed to inclusion.
20. Confident when supporting pupils with complex needs and challenging circumstances.
