An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Purchasing & Stores Manager to join a major UK manufacturer at their fabrication and production facility in Barnsley. This role is pivotal in supporting global supply chain operations and ensuring a world-class approach to purchasing, materials flow, and internal logistics.
This is a key leadership position offering the chance to shape a global supply base, influence strategic purchasing decisions, and drive continuous improvement across purchasing, stores and stock control.
About the Role
This position is responsible for both Purchasing Management and Stores & Internal Logistics, ensuring seamless end-to-end material flow, supplier performance, and stock optimisation.
Purchasing Leadership
You will lead the purchasing function on site, ensuring a stable, ethical, and high-performing supplier base. Key areas include:
- Developing, managing and coaching a dedicated purchasing team
- Driving supplier development and world-class logistics performance
- Implementing secure, efficient purchasing strategies aligned with business needs
- Managing cost control, contract negotiations and strategic sourcing activities
Stores & Internal Logistics
You will oversee all internal materials movement, stock control and logistics operations, ensuring processes support production demands. Responsibilities include:
- Aligning stocking policies with planning, scheduling and safety stock requirements
- Coaching and developing the stock control team
- Delivering continuous improvement using IT systems, data automation and logistics optimisation
- Ensuring accuracy in inventory, PI counts and annual stock takes
Key Responsibilities
- Managing a supplier portfolio exceeding £10M spend
- Negotiating robust, commercially secure supply contracts
- Developing structured global supply bases with dual-source capability
- Implementing KPIs, scorecards and supplier performance monitoring
- Conducting supplier audits, tenders and strategic partner development
- Supporting NPI projects and production launches
- Ensuring effective purchasing planning and MRP parameter management
- Achieving cost reductions through engineering, sourcing and logistics initiatives
- Leading logistics strategy aligned to purchasing and global supply chain needs
- Managing stock accuracy, slow-moving/obsolete inventory and discrepancy investigations
- Maintaining ISO 9001/14001/18001 compliance
- Creating and maintaining process documentation and training materials
Experience & Qualifications
Essential
- 5+ years in senior purchasing, commodity management or supply chain
- Background in steel, fabrications, and machined components
- Experience in single-piece-flow production environments
- Strong MRP knowledge and Microsoft Office skills
- Proven experience in internal logistics & inventory management
- Strong negotiation skills and experience with contract management
- Willingness to travel globally for supplier support
- Experience with lean, supplier auditing and PPAP/QPAP processes
Desirable
- CIPS qualification (or working towards)
- Experience with open-book costing and PPV
- Exposure to automotive supply chain standards
