A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (Aircrew – Pilot – AM, ISR, RW or CA) to serve as 115 SQN QFI at RAF Wittering on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS), with an initial proposed start date of being not before 20 April 2026 (or later, subject to candidate availability). 6 FTS is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the country. From its HQ at RAFC Cranwell, the school manages a broad range of flying instruction from Elementary Flying at University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for the Air Cadet Organisation. Responsibilities include: 115 Sqn operates the Tutor (Grob 115E) aircraft. As a QFI you will conduct air and ground instruction for qualified pilots undergoing instructor training and, on occasion, conduct elementary flying training sorties for ab-initio, International and University Air Squadron pilots. You will also be required to conduct training for other aircrew branches and provide familiarisation training iaw 6 FTS tasking that is allocated to 115 Sqn. You will be working as a member of a small team and be required to undertake a range of additional duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the squadron. In addition to your duties with 115 Sqn, but within the terms and conditions of FTRS service, you will be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday 0800 to 1730 in the Winter and 0730 to 1800 in the Summer, although these hours may vary to meet specific needs and may include weekend flying and overnight stops away from RAF Wittering. Responsibilities will include: Routine Air and Ground instruction is support of 6FTS tasks. Maintain QFI category. Maintain currency as an authorizer and supervisor iaw current orders. Deliver and monitor student flying progress and administer flying records and documentation. Authorize sorties in accordance with the powers of authorization issued to you by the Aviation Delivery Duty Holder (ADDH). Supervise flying and ensure that it is conducted safely and in accordance with applicable military and civilian flying regulations. Liaise with other flying units, air traffic control and the aircraft engineers to achieve efficient planning and programming of flying. Proactively manage air safety IAW the 6 FTS Air Safety Management Plan (ASMP) and take appropriate action in the event of any transgressions of flying regulations. Carry out additional duties as required by OC 115Sqn. Non-QFIs will be required to pass the QFI course. When qualified, applicants can expect approx 6 months employment within the Wittering Tutor Flying Wing as a line instructor to build experience prior to upgrade to CAI.
