The role

Are you an organised, hands-on stores and logistics professional with experience leading a team in a manufacturing environment? We’re looking for a Lead Stores Controller to join our Operations team in Woking, Surrey. In this key role, you’ll take ownership of stores, inventory, shipping and logistics activities, ensuring materials are managed accurately, deliveries are completed on time, and the stores function operates safely, efficiently and to a high standard.Key Responsibilities

Stores control

  • Review active sales orders to identify shipemnt requirements and roactively support on time delivery.
  • Maintain the stores in a clean, organised, and secure condition, ensuring all goods and materials are stored in designated locations in line with an evolving 5S methodology.
  • Deliver materials against requisitions and pick lists accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all stock transactions are completed promptly, accurately, and are fully traceable within company systems.
  • Monitor stock levels and movements, identifying and escalating Excess and Obsolete (E&O) items as appropriate.
  • Support the R&D Department with the organisation of R&D archive stock.
  • Maintain expiration of any consumables such as threadlock, highlighting any concerns or shortages proactively.
  • Lead, organise, and support the stores team to ensure daily priorities are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
  • Allocate workload, provide day-to-day guidance, and promote high standards of housekeeping, stock accuracy, and process discipline across the stores function.

Communication and Support

  • Proactively notify Operations Control of any material shortages, constraints, or identified issues that may impact production.
  • Notify the Operations and Quality teams of any quality issues identified while carrying out stores activities.
  • Ensure adequate levels of packaging materials are maintained to support shipment requirements.

Packing, Shipping and Logistics

  • Pack materials appropriately to ensure safe handling and transit.
  • Coordinate and oversee inbound and outbound logistics activities, ensuring shipments to customers and suppliers are booked effectively and completed on time.
  • Ensure all shipping, export, and associated documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage relationships with outsourced logistics and shipping providers, monitoring service levels, resolving issues, and identifying opportunities for improved performance and cost control.

Inventory Control & Reporting

  • Provide regular inventory reports to the Operations and Finance teams and support any resulting follow‑up activities.
  • Organise and control perpetual inventory counts to achieve the businesses desired cycle counting coverage across main stores and the production shop floor.
  • Ensure established perpetual inventory KPIs are met or exceeded.
  • Provide quarterly reports summarising perpetual inventory KPI performance against agreed targets.
  • Complete stock takes as required by the business, investigating and resolving discrepancies.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with required Health & Safety standards.
  • Comply with the company’s waste management policy, including the handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required to support the needs of the business
  • Monitor, record, and report company waste tonnage in line with the company’s waste management process.

Skills & Qualifications

Mandatory

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics at Grade C / 4 or above.
  • Strong numeracy skills with the ability to work accurately with quantities, weights, and records.
  • Computer literate, with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly in both written and spoken English.
  • Experience working within a medium-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience leading or supervising a stores, warehouse, or inventory team.
  • Experience of logistics and shipping operations, including coordinating shipments and managing associated documentation.
  • Experience managing outsourced logistics and shipping providers or third-party carriers.
  • A high level of attention to detail with a strong focus on quality and accuracy.
  • Counterbalance forklift truck licence, or relevant experience with willingness to obtain certification if required.

Preferred

  • A professional qualification in Logistics, Supply Chain, or Materials Management.
  • Technical awareness or competence in electronic and/or mechanical engineering environments.
  • Experience working within a business producing electro-mechanical products.
  • Knowledge and experience using modern ERP / MRP systems within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience improving logistics, shipping, or stores processes to enhance service, compliance, or cost performance.

The Process

Most of our interviews will take place over one or two stages, typically a phone/teams interview followed by a face-to-face interview on-site. We do ask all candidates who are coming to a face-to-face interview to carry out a short Psychometric assessment to help us understand how you tick!
