Job Title: Senior clinical fellow in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and ITU

Start Date: June 2026

Contract Type: Fixed term

Duration: 3 months

Purpose for Fixed Term: Training Contract

This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.

Main duties

* Provide anaesthesia and intensive care for patients undergoing cardiac surgery
* Provide anaesthesia for patients undergoing thoracic surgery
* Provide anaesthesia for patients undergoing cardiology procedures (ablations, TAVI, MTEER)

Working context

The cardiothoracic team is made up of many doctors, nurses and allied health staff who work together for the patients and to support each other. The patients are often complex and teamwork is mandatory to ensure great outcomes for the patients. This role is vital for the day-to-day care of the patients alongside the other team members both in and out of hours. You will work hard and benefit from the experience and rewards of working in a team that delivers excellent care to complex patients. You will also have access to the full competency-based teaching programme run by the cardiac anaesthesia department.

Working for our organisation

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and, in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care. We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme. Southampton is an attractive place to live and work with good transport links, nearby natural beauty, and a cost of living position different from larger cities.

Note: Please ensure recruitment materials reflect current policy and do not rely on generic, AI-generated content. Personalising your application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial.
