Deputy Director for Environmental Markets & Regulation - 30904
We are seeking a Deputy Director to support the delivery of regulatory regimes driven by government reform and increasing environmental ambition. The role involves providing strategic leadership and management of specialist operational teams that regulate market-based schemes such as Producer Responsibility Waste markets, Carbon Markets, and Hazardous Waste, among others.
The successful candidate will work with government, industry, and partner regulators to ensure effective delivery of services with high national and international impact. Responsibilities include leading operational standards, providing technical regulatory guidance, and fostering collaborative relationships with stakeholders. The role also emphasizes people leadership, championing health, safety, wellbeing, diversity, and inclusion, and contributing to wider organizational goals.
The team, Environmental Markets & Regulation, is part of the National Regulation & Monitoring in Operations, comprising around 550 staff, with plans to grow. They work closely across various departments and with external bodies.
Key skills and experience required include proven operational leadership across diverse teams, experience managing complex work programmes, excellent communication skills, and the ability to influence at senior levels. A professional qualification in any discipline and experience navigating political and regulatory environments are essential.
This role reports to Malcolm Lythgo, Director of Operations, and involves participating in virtual briefings and interviews scheduled for May and July 2025. The position offers flexible working arrangements and is committed to diversity and inclusion.
