The role
Health & Safety Co-ordinator, University Campus based in Kent, temporary, 3 months until end of September 2026, £20.60 per hour plus holiday pay, 4 days office based 1 day WFH
Renowned University, requires a Health and Safety Co-ordinator to assist the Associate Director and work within one of the University Faculties. You will assist the Bio Safety Advisor and the Operating Officer to promote a safe working culture and maintain the safety and wellbeing of staff, students, contractors and visitors. You will need to be a strong Administrator preferably with NEBOSH general certificate. Excellent communication skills are a must as are analytical and problem solving skills. This role is working 4 days on site and 1 at home and will require that you travel between campuses on a regular basis.
Duties of the Health & Safety Co-ordinator will include:
- Promoting effective health and safety management to maintain the wellbeing of staff, students, contractors and visitors
- Acting as the local administrative lead for health and safety software - accident / incident management system, pre-travel risk assessment tool, personal safety app and online training modules
- Troubleshooting issues, ensuring accidents are investigated
- Escalating matters to the central H&S team
- Supporting the faculty senior management team to ensure that sufficient resources/funds are available to meet the requirements of the University H&S policy
- Conducting H&S training gap analysis and co-ordinate the training programme for the faculty, ensuring that relevant records are maintained
- Providing H&S performance data to local Senior Management team / H&S committee, including producing reports, identifying trends, notifying of any deficiencies, co-ordinating remedial actions where required
- Conducting Risk Assessments as required
- Acting as a local Display Screen Assessors (DSE) by providing general advice/assisting in sourcing ergonomic equipment and escalating complex DSE cases to the central H&S team
- Providing basic advice on operational health and safety issues.
- Proactively working to embed Health and Safety across the institution by collaborating with other health and safety roles holders to ensure a consistent, professional and positive approach to the management of health and safety, including the development of a high-performing and strong health and safety culture
Skills you will need:
- Self-motivated with the ability to work on own initiative
- Entry level H&S qualification e.g IOSH Managing Safely / NEBOSH Health and Safety at Work Award / NEBOSH HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessments at Work
- If you have NEBOSH General Certificate or OH&S NVQ level 3 (or equivalent qualification in a relevant scientific / health & safety field) that would be useful, as would Technical Membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
- Collaborative in ensuring the efficient management of Health and Safety, working under pressure and to tight deadlines
- Able to adhere to and promote the University’s policies on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Information Security
- Able to ensure compliance with Health & Safety and Data Protection Legislation
- Ability to support and promote University Sustainability policies and best practice relating to digital content and accessibility
- Experience working as a health and safety co-ordinator, reviewing and assessing health and safety performance data, including risk assessments
- If you have experience working within Higher Education that would be a plus, as would experience of conducting DSE self-assessments, investigating accidents / incidents, reviewing travel risk assessments and auditing and reviewing safety management systems
