The position is in the specimen reception of the molecular diagnostics laboratory, managed by Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS). BSPS is a large and established pathology network operating across Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey, Frimley Health, Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals, and Surrey and Sussex NHS Trusts.
The post holder will work within a laboratory environment and assist in the preparation of analytical work by receiving, labelling, and entering pathology specimen requests onto the laboratory computer system under the supervision of a team leader. The role also involves dispatching samples to reference laboratories as required. Flexible working hours can be discussed.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Receive and handle molecular and genetic requests and samples from across the BSPS network.
2. Deal with the reception of samples.
3. Accurately enter patient details into the hospital database.
4. Label and prepare samples for analysis.
5. File and dispatch patient reports and samples.
6. Manage telephone enquiries professionally.
7. Maintain work quality within the department.
8. Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times.
9. Communicate effectively with pathology staff, hospital staff, porters, drivers, and couriers.
10. Perform additional duties of a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) as required.
