Are you passionate about the sea and skilled at working on board vessels?

Join Field Studies Council Millport as a Casual Deckhand, supporting the safe, efficient, and professional operation of our research and passenger vessel.

1. Enjoy having the flexibility to work casually, shifts will be offered as and when they arise.

2. You can choose to accept or decline shifts based on your availability.

3. You’ll be paid circa £12.45 per hour worked.

Established in 1943, our network of Learning Locations provide day and residential courses for all ages, from young children to retired adults, from schools and communities throughout the UK, reaching many others through our publications and community-based programmes.

What you’ll be doing

As a Casual Deckhand, you’ll assist with navigation, deck maintenance, handling mooring lines, loading/unloading and passenger embarkation/disembarkation.

You’ll also help maintain the pier facilities and fishing equipment, respond to onboard emergencies, and ensure compliance with maritime safety standards.

You may occasionally be required to assist with charters that will require you to travel on the vessel and stay away overnight in land-based accommodation

Where you’ll be based

The Field Studies Council Millport centre is situated on the Isle of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. Surrounded by nature, purpose-built teaching spaces, and comfortable accommodation with sea views, the centre offers an inspiring environment to learn and deliver engaging outdoor education. Its eco-friendly design and access to a Research Vessel allow staff and students to explore the marine environment in unique ways.

Millport provides endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. From coastal exploration and snorkelling to hill walking, rock climbing, and team challenges, the island itself becomes a living classroom. We ask that you have:

4. Proven deckhand or maritime experience.

5. Knowledge of safe working practices on board vessels.

6. Understanding of health, safety, and emergency procedures in a maritime environment.

7. Ability to work effectively in a team and follow instructions from senior crew.

8. Ability to undertake the physical aspects of deck duties, including handling ropes, operating equipment, and working outdoors in all weather conditions

9. A committed and proactive approach to personal development; motivated to learn new skills and overcome new challenges
