Postdoctoral researcher in spatial bioinformatics applied to cancer

Oxford
University of Oxford
Posted: 31 August
Offer description

Contract type: Fixed term for 2 years in the first instance with the possibility to extend for a further 3

Hours: Full-time

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Translation Biology Research Group led by Mr Alex Gordon-Weeks and Professor Kerry Fisher. The group is focussed on understanding the human tumour microenvironment (TME) and its role in cancer progression, immune evasion, and therapeutic resistance. We place a strong emphasis on the use of spatial biological approaches applied to human tumour models including organ/tumour perfusion, slice culture and organoids to ensure data is clinically relevant. Our overarching aim is to utilise these techniques to identify therapeutic targets to which we can generate effective treatments.

The post would suit someone with a high level of organisational skills and keen to share some responsibility of looking after the laboratory, alongside their own bioinformatics work and acting as a conduit for collaborating groups.

You will also be expected to assist with supervision of junior members of the research team, visiting scientists and international collaborators, particularly with the aim of strengthening the departments bioinformatics capabilities more broadly. You would be encouraged to take part in postgraduate teaching (mostly MSc students) that would typically amount to 2-3 lectures or tutorial per year.

This full-time/part-time post is available from 13th October 2025 and is fixed term for 2 years in the first instance with the possibility to extend for a further 3.

About you

You will hold a PhD/DPhil (or near to completion) in a bioinformatics field, preferably related to cancer biology. Ideally you should have expertise in spatial biological approaches. You should have advanced skills in code generation and manipulation and a knowledge of relevant statistical methods.

You will possess exceptional organisational skills, an ability to work efficiently with collaborators and to supervise and educate junior co-workers. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proven ability to write in English at a suitable standard
