L1 Payroll Associate, GCR Payroll Operate (Newcastle)

Opportunity

We are currently looking for Payroll Associates to join our UK Payroll Operate based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, Manchester and Belfast. This is an excellent opportunity to join our fast‑growing payroll team within EY. Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for the delivery of payroll services for new and existing clients.


Your Key Responsibilities

* Process payroll data each pay period accurately and to an agreed payroll schedule.
* Set up new joiners on the payroll software.
* Terminate employees on the payroll software.
* Import pay data into the payroll software.
* Process statutory payments.
* Validate the system calculation of PAYE, NI and Apprenticeship levy amounts payable.
* Complete payroll reports and send to clients, e.g., General Ledger.
* Send regulatory compliance, FPS, EPS, Auto enrolment and Apprenticeship Levy.
* Create BACS files for payment of employees.
* Issue online Payslips, P60s and P45s to employees.
* Keep payroll schedules/calendars up to date.
* Maintain client files, document procedures and take minutes from client meetings.
* Prepare reports and monitor EY key performance metrics.
* Maintain a good working relationship with clients and other EY employees/teams.
* Prepare invoices and issue to clients on a monthly basis.
* Participate in ISAE certification process.
* Understand payroll system updates and testing process.
* Escalate payroll issues to Senior Associates and Payroll Leadership as required.


Skills and Attributes for Success

* Highly motivated and enthusiastic.
* High IT skills, including experience with Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
* High attention to detail, accuracy and checking own work.
* Ability to handle increasingly high volume of work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
* Experience working towards deadlines and multi‑tasking.
* Excellent communication and presentation skills.
* Critical thinking – ability to work under own initiative to solve problems.
* Flexibility to meet demands of the position (e.g., quick turnarounds).
* Knowledge of SharePoint.


Qualifications

* 1–2 years of end‑to‑end payroll processing experience.
* Good knowledge and understanding of payroll compliance and best practice.
* Experience with IRIS Payroll Software and/or iTrent is preferred.
* Understanding of payroll compliance including AE, RTI, Apprenticeship Levy and Employment Allowance.
