Material engineer – cathode active materials

Plymouth
Altilium
Materials engineer
€80,000 - €100,000 a year
Posted: 1 June
Offer description

At Altilium, you’ll join a pioneering team shaping the future of battery materials and clean technology. As a Materials Engineer within our Cathode Active Materials (CAM) team, you’ll play a critical role in developing high- performance, low-carbon battery materials, using feedstocks recovered the recycling from end-of-life electric vehicle batteries.

You will help reimagine the lifecycle of critical minerals by transforming them into next-generation cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, building a brand new industry within a cleaner, circular energy future.

In addition to process design and scale-up, you’ll support the design and setup of our specialist lab facilities, specifying and commissioning new equipment for p-CAM and CAM research and characterisation. Your work will help move concepts from lab-scale to industrial production, supporting automotive partners with high-quality, low-carbon materials ready for re-engineering into new battery cells.

What You’ll Do:

* Lead research and development on the synthesis, formulation, and characterisation of p-CAM and CAM materials.
* Design and conduct lab-scale experiments to optimise material properties (e.g. morphology, phase purity, particle size distribution).
* Process transfer from lab-scale to Pilot and industrial scale for both p- CAM and CAM processes.
* Analyse materials using advanced techniques (e.g. XRD, SEM, BET, ICP, TGA, PSD), interpreting data to drive improvements in both production and performance.
* Collaborate across functions including Process Engineering, Quality, and Commercial to align R&D & Pilot Operations with business priorities.
* Prepare technical reports, contribute to intellectual property development, and support regulatory documentation.
* Stay informed on industry and academic advancements to ensure we remain at the forefront of cathode materials research.
* Uphold health, safety, and environmental standards in all lab and pilot activities.
* Act as a technical bridge between customer requirements and internal development teams.

What You’ll Bring:

* PhD or MSc in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
* Proven experience in synthesis and characterisation of electrochemically active materials for lithium-ion batteries (ideally NMC- based)
* Knowledge of wet-chemistry precipitation methods and solid phase processing, including calcination and milling.
* Proficiency in using powder characterisation tools and interpreting material data.
* Familiarity with process scale-up and pilot plant operations is desirable.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic R&D environment. This includes potentially sensitive communications with external entities such as project partners, customers and/or regulatory bodies.
* Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.

About Us:

Altilium is a UK-based clean technology group supporting the transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based to zero-carbon.

Our vision is for a circular and domestic EV battery supply chain, where the critical minerals powering the energy transition are safely recovered from recycling end-of-life EV batteries and mine tailings, saving natural resources and reducing mining.

We are developing the green processing technologies and building at-scale recycling infrastructure to decarbonise the automotive supply chain, providing the lowest carbon, most eco-friendly battery materials for a cleaner transport future.

This is your opportunity to be in at the beginning of the sixth wave industrial revolution, providing circular energy solutions to the UK and Europe as part of a global team.

Our Commitment:

We’re working to be an inclusive employer, and we encourage people from all backgrounds, ways of thinking and working to apply. We love that everyone brings different perspectives and experiences.

We strive to eliminate any barriers that might prevent individuals from showcasing their skills and qualifications. If you require adjustments at any stage of the application process or to the role, please let us know and we’ll see how we can accommodate them.
